A tunnel between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote!

A study has been undertaken into the possibility of a tunnel between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote -
http://www.noticiasfuerteventura.com/fue...n-el-pioft

A Google translation of the article:

12 kilometers of track under the sea, another seven of surface connection, and up to one thousand one hundred million euros of cost, are the calculations incorporated into the Insular Plan of Management with Fuerteventura (PIOF) in a study commissioned by the Island Council during the past legislature to make an underwater tunnel with Lanzarote. The ‘highway’ under La Bocaina would be 12 kilometers long, along with another seven kilometers of links on the surface. It is the other alternative to the bridge next to the island of Lobos that is also valued in the same PIOF.
The underwater tunnel would cross the entire Strait of La Bocaina. Faced with the technical bridge proposal, the tunnel studies are much more developed and soil sampling has already been carried out to identify their characteristics. The PSOE deputy for Fuerteventura, Iñaki Lavandera reported the existence of these studies in statements to declaraciones Fuerteventura FM ’, showing his favorable opinion to assess these options.
For construction, two technical alternatives are taken into account: by drilling and blasting, or by tunneling machinery. Of course, cost differences are very important. The use of drilling and blasting could require about 970,679,160 euros, while if the tunneling equipment is chosen, the cost would rise to 1,131,569,950 euros.
It should be clarified that in addition to the construction methods, the technical study commissioned by the Cabildo for the tunnel defines two types of design.
A first alternative involves the execution of two parallel, but unidirectional, tunnels for each direction of movement, with emergency connections between them every 400 m. A second alternative contemplates the excavation of a single bidirectional tunnel. In both cases the maximum period of execution of the works is around 16 months.

This is something that would definitely help to fill the island with more (not only one day) tourists. Not sure about the 16 months though 🤔😅

It's all a bit unbelievable yet the Cabildo have paid for the study.

Where would the Money come from?

It will have taken 16 months to complete the pavement work from the market up to the Montecastillo Center in Caleta, if they do manage to complete it by December!  That is a Cabildo project!

probably EU Money, and 16 years is a more realistic time frame, which would possible escalate the cost by a factor of 12

This is a ludicrous proposal.  There's no way on earth to justify spending a billion on a tunnel.

The Money will come from the future Captain, unless the Klingons get it first.

There's a lot of interesting comments from Spanish people on the Facebook page that the story was on - NoticiasFuerteventura Tongue Tongue

Such as - they can't solve the water supply problem, there's not enough Money to complete the north-south motorway, the bad state of some roads, is it a joke?etc.
