Radio Sintonia:
The City Council of La Oliva welcomes 7 new Local Police officers.
The City Council of La Oliva has welcomed the 7 agents who this morning have taken office as officials of the municipal body of Local Police, in an event held at the Raíz del Pueblo Cultural Center, which was attended by representatives of the government group, colleagues, relatives and close people.
The mayor, Isaí Blanco, who also holds the Department of Citizen Security, said that "it is a very big responsibility to ensure citizen security in the municipality, as well as a source of pride. The new agents come with a lot of desire to work, and we are all very happy, both them and the entire government group. Today we congratulate them, and we wish them the best of luck," said Isaí Blanco.
The mayor was accompanied by the entire government group, the deputy chief inspector of the Local Police of La Oliva, Jorge Fleitas, among other members of the corporation.
The sub-inspector of the corps also dedicated some emotional words to his new colleagues: "With the incorporation of these new members, our goal is to improve the service to the community. We are committed to being available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is essential that our neighbors can count on an effective Police response when they need it most, and when their presence is crucial in any area of our municipality. We are extremely proud to welcome these seven new positions, and in 2024, 8 more will be added, which means that we will soon have a total of 15 additional officers on the streets, ready to serve our fellow citizens," said Jorge Fleitas.
For his part, the first deputy mayor of the City of La Oliva, Julio Santana, added: "The work of the Police is fundamental in our community. We are working tirelessly to strengthen our resources and improve the Police response. These new locations are just the beginning of our efforts to provide more efficient service."
All those present congratulated the new officers for having passed the tests, in this case aimed at filling vacancies in the corps that, in recent years, had become vacant, such as due to retirements. After a selection process of about a year, the new agents will now spend three months at the academy to complete their training, and then return to join and serve definitively in the municipality of La Oliva.
La Oliva will incorporate up to 15 new Local Police officers and 5 firefighters
In addition to these 7 agents who join the Local Police of La Oliva by replacement, the government group incorporates in the 2024 Budget 8 Local Police positions, in this case yes, newly created, for a total of 15 new agents, and another 5 Fire Department positions, with the idea of reinforcing the municipal bodies of Citizen Security.
This document, which is expected to be approved in plenary before the end of this year, also contemplates the figures of the chain of command in both bodies that are currently not defined, which will improve the functioning of the body at the level of coordination and organization.
Surveillance, security and coordination
The City Council of La Oliva currently has 33 Local Police officers, and another 17 firefighter positions. The municipality is below the national ratios, as is the case in most territories, and that is why the objective of the city council is to continue strengthening both bodies in terms of personnel, facilities, and material resources.
The other Police force that serves in La Oliva is the Guardia Civil, with whom the mayor and the commanders of the Local Police maintain close and regular coordination.
However, other bodies such as the National Police do not intervene in La Oliva, which is a disadvantage compared to other municipalities such as Puerto del Rosario, which does have this reinforcement and the participation, therefore, of the three bodies.
That is why the City Council of La Oliva is working on improving security with other tools, such as the traffic surveillance cameras that are planned to be installed in Corralejo in the near future.
These devices are regularly used for road safety issues, although exceptionally, in the case of serious crimes in the area, they could be used for investigation.
