The Aldi chain plans to create 400 jobs and 20 supermarkets in the Canary Islands

The popular German supermarket chain Aldi will open 20 supermarkets in the Canary Islands, where it plans to create more than 400 jobs in the next three years and, in addition, is already building its first logistics platform in the Arinaga industrial estate, in the Gran Canaria municipality of Agüimes, with an investment of 30 million euros.

Aldi adds this expansion on the islands to the 350 establishments it has in Spain, where it has grown with 31 new supermarkets this year and plans to open another six on the peninsula before the end of 2021.

With the start of operations in the Canary Islands, Aldi plans to incorporate local Canarian products into its usual assortment, made up of nearly 2,000 items, which can be purchased in supermarkets on the islands and the peninsula.

The CEO of the company, Valentín Lumbreras, has reported on the construction of the logistics platform, the fifth that will be available in Spain, in an event attended by the presidents of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, Ángel Víctor Torres and Antonio Morales, respectively, as well as the mayor of Agüimes, Óscar Hernández.

According to Lumbreras, the company will generate more than 220 direct jobs during 2022, up to over 400 new jobs, among store personnel, logistics platforms and administration in the next 3 years, in which it plans to open about 20 new supermarkets in the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

GMT: A couple of years ago I walked in an Aldi in Murcia, definitely not the same as the ones in England, but the more competition and choice the better.

I am pretty sure the reason for that is, Aldi UK is run by a separate company to Aldi Spain, they were originally one company run by two brothers { which is where the urban myth that Lidl and Aldi are were run by brothers came from } they are Aldi North and Aldi South, despite the geographical names they are not split that way the UK and Ireland for example are Aldi South while Spain is Aldi North??? some years ago they had a major argument over whether or not to sell Cigarettes and Tobacco in their stores. which led to the split.

At the risk of being a misery.....
Whilst it may be great for competition & pricing, unless there's greater demand any new jobs has to be offset by drop in business for smaller local shops employing less people.
Just a thought.

That is always a possibility, however they are more likely to affect the likes of Lidl, Mercadona or Superdino, as they will undoubtedly build out of town or on the edge of a town.

Agreed John, just pointing out whenever a company announces new jobs sometimes it's at the cost of other jobs.
If the smaller local shops close it can be pain having to get in the car / bus as opposed to walking to get everyday essentials.
