The president of the Cabildo and responsible for the Infrastructure Area, Sergio Lloret López, and the Minister of Sports, Claudio Gutiérrez, visited this Thursday with the Councilor for Sports of the City of La Oliva, Jero Lozano, the beginning of the works of the athletics track that will be built in the town of Corralejo, next to the municipal pool.
This sports infrastructure, which includes an annex building to serve it, is executed on a plot of 55,200 square meters, although the track with its eight approved streets will occupy an area of 16,544 m2, including protection areas.
This action is included in the Insular Plan for Cooperation with Municipal Works and Services (PICOS) within the package of actions agreed with the City of La Oliva. The work was awarded last August to the company Tecopsa-OPC, for an amount of 2,145,249 euros, and have an execution period of eleven months.
In his visit, the island president, Sergio Lloret, welcomed the beginning of a project that has had a "long and complex" administrative procedure but that "finally begins the execution phase to respond to a long demand from the neighbors of Corralejo and La Oliva and that will benefit the majorera society in general", while contributing to "promoting the tourism-sport binomial".
Lloret also thanked the willingness and collaboration of the City of La Oliva to carry out "this infrastructure framed in the PICOS, a plan in which we work with the six municipalities so that together we can the best possible services, in this case in sports matters".
For his part, the Minister of Sports, Claudio Gutiérrez, said that at last some works begin "long awaited by the world of athletics and necessary for the practice of this sport and that will serve us to attract competitions that can positively influence the tourism-sport binomial".
"This is another project within the island cooperation plan and a work much desired and demanded by citizens, and that will be a great boost for the athletics sector that will have an artificial turf area, the athletics track and an area of annex buildings. It is also a great support for the athletics club of Corralejo, Maxoathlon, "said the counselor.
In the execution of the work, the resources of the environment occupied by the site will be used so that the facilities are integrated into it and for this a stone slope will be conditioned that will protect the track.
According to the needs of the Spanish Athletics Federation, the track will have eight streets, and inside it will have natural grass for the practice of throwing sports, while its outer perimeter will be based on artificial turf and natural stone, as explained by the manager of the winning company, Juan José Soto.
The Councilor for Sports of the City of La Oliva, Jero Lozano, expressed his satisfaction to see that "a demand of the athletes of the municipality begins to be a reality. There are many people who have worked to carry out this project, from the Cabildo to the City Council, and today we are happy to be able to count within eleven months with facilities in which our athletes can compete but also athletes from other islands and internationals . "
