Denounced two Italian tourists who sneak into the Oasis Wildlife and "mistreat animals".
They also upload videos to social networks with vandalism throughout Fuerteventura.
The center for the rescue and recovery of species in Fuerteventura, Oasis Wildlife, has been forced to report to the Court two young people of Italian nationality, who have disseminated audiovisual and photographic content on different social networks (Instagram and YouTube the most outstanding) where they show scenes of animal abuse inside and outside the center, in addition to other vandalism actions throughout Fuerteventura (destruction of vehicles, tourist facilities and natural heritage of the Island)
The two accused entered the rescue center, on April 23, in broad daylight and illegally, jumping the security fences. There they intimidated and psychologically abused different animals of the center. The video shows actions against Sagar, a primate of the Species Macaco de Bonet, where they take advantage of the impossibility of defending this sentient being. Precisely this animal that has been mocked, is a previous victim of Illegal Trafficking and Animal Abuse.
This specimen arrived five years ago at the Oasis Wildlife rescue center to be rehabilitated from the serious consequences it presented, after its seizure in a large-scale operation carried out in Germany to a network of traffickers. After the attack he has presented a stereotyped behavior, due to negative frustrations generated by a stressful situation.
They then jumped the maximum security fences of the rescue center, entering the facilities, indicated as very dangerous, and marked with code red in the OWLF management protocol, such as the giraffe savannah and the African elephant area, disturbing the animals and altering their behavior. In the case of elephants, they go directly to a rescued specimen called Diuna, also a victim of abuse in the past. The African elephant responded negatively to the intrusion of the subjects.
Both were expelled by the Oasis Wildlife teams after seeing irregular behavior and also being denounced by several visitors to the center who observed the reprehensible behavior of these two subjects.
Outside the rescue center, the individuals bought a hamster and put it in a plastic exercise ball for this, more than the recommended time, and without any mercy, they dedicated themselves to leaving the ball with the animal inside, in different locations of the mall, to record the anguished reaction of the same. Finally they returned it to the store where it had been acquired, proving once again, that all they wanted was to generate audiovisual content at the expense of animal suffering.
In the videos broadcast, criminal scenes of serious animal abuse are observed, which have no other purpose than mockery, to obtain profit on social networks and inspire others to imitate these behaviors.
Very serious acts that must have consequences
From the management of Oasis Wildlife they want to emphasize their energetic rejection of the scenes recorded in the video and are outraged with the action of the two young people, since they assure that "this was not a joke of kids, but a real planned and unjustified action of animal abuse. It is a very serious act of vandalism, which has nothing to do with entertainment on social networks, nor for society in general and should be punished, so that it is not an example of anything. These actions should mark legal preferences, so that this type of acts are not repeated again, "said Guacimara Cabrera, manager of Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura.
Planned actions against security
The center has brought the facts to the attention of the Courts and the Italian Consulate, which it has urged to take measures, so that these serious Events do not occur again. The young people denounced show at all times, with their actions outside and inside the center, a planned action to bypass the rules set in different areas of the island. In the case of Oasis Wildlife, they have taken advantage of the changes of guard of the facilities, to access the restricted areas, where the animals are located (all of them cataloged as very dangerous in the safety and management protocols of OWLF).
With these serious actions, the individuals denounced not only put their lives at risk, but also that of the rest of the visitors, that of the animals themselves, as well as that of the workers of the center, if they had had to intervene to act, in the face of an imminent danger. Oasis Wildlife has detailed safety protocols, and a team that watches day and night for compliance with the rules for the protection, both of animals and people.
Content like this can be extremely dangerous, because it can "normalize" the disrespectful treatment of animals, even for the youngest users of its platform. It also increases the risk of "imitation" behavior of these despicable acts, by other people.
Awareness campaign on social networks
Following these incidents, Oasis Wildlife has decided to launch an awareness campaign about the mistreatment of animals on social networks. The species recovery center, which already launched in 2019 the campaign against abuse and abandonment "Who will speak for me", will carry out new actions next September to raise awareness about the use of nets and the protection of species. The objective of the center is to educate in good practices and in the protection of our biodiversity. Oasis Wildlife wants to prevent actions like those of these two vandals from being an example for the new generations.
