Radio Sintonia:
Betancuria Rural Park, an example of coexistence between agriculture and natural values.
The island of Fuerteventura has some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Canary Islands, including the Betancuria Rural Park, classified as a protected area.
Natural treasure of Fuerteventura
The Betancuria Rural Park is located on the west coast of the island of Fuerteventura, covering an area of 16,210.82 hectares. Within its territorial scope is also located the Natural Monument of Ajuí (31.02 ha.), which houses a deposit of ancient materials of great scientific value, with oceanic sediments and fossils of disappeared marine animals declared an Area of Ecological Sensitivity (Law 11/1990, on the Prevention of Ecological Impact).
Betancuria, Rural Park
In this space, the unique geological nature of the Betancuria Massif and traditional uses converge that make man a prominent component of the environment. Here is one of the most spectacular outcrops of the basal complex in the Canary Islands, which provides not only a high scientific interest, but also a landscape of a unique chromaticism and structure, to which we must add the existence of traditional uses and elements that present a great cultural value as well as ecological. These are its most relevant values and have been the main foundation for its protection under the figure of Rural Park.
The spirit of the figure of Rural Park is precisely the compatibility of two aspects that do not always coexist harmoniously: a traditional agricultural activity and natural values that here are synergistically integrated creating an environment of great landscape and ecocultural value, worthy of being preserved. The Rural Park of Betancuria thus has the opportunity to become an excellent example of active conservation, where the preservation of the resources of the territory goes through a direct intervention of man that, in this case, translates into the maintenance of traditional cultural practices of great importance for the conservation of the scarcest and most precious resources of this Island: water and soil.
A space with threatened species
It should also be noted the presence of threatened plants and animals, as well as plant formations of great natural value, many of them considered habitats of Community interest. Due to its general importance for birds, this area has also been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
The same climatic, edaphic, hydrological and biological conditions that make the Betancuria Massif a physiographic and geological unit perfectly differentiated from the rest of the island, have conditioned the settlement in its surroundings of most of the majorera population until quite recent times, and within the Park is the first nucleus and capital of Fuerteventura: the town of Santa María de Betancuria, declared an artistic ensemble in 1979.
