A vehicle falls off a cliff on Esquinzo Beach while its driver was having breakfast. Agents of the Local Police of La Oliva appeared on Monday, March 7, after 10 in the morning at Esquinzo Beach, after a call in which it was reported that a rental vehicle of a rentacar had rushed down a cliff in the area, north of the island, there are no people inside. The driver, according to the information to which Radio Sintonía Fuerteventura has had access, was outside the vehicle having breakfast. Apparently, he tried to stop him and this caused injuries to his feet so he was transferred to a health center.
Esquinzo Beach is a little traveled beach, with about 330 meters long and a width of 33 meters. Access by car is complicated and is delimited by small cliffs. Tamara: so, be warned, don't eat breakfast! link to original article for fun pics

Hire car - taken off road so insurance won't cover it! Expensive holiday for someone Not just the car but I would expect them to be liable for recovery costs as well!

The Local Police of La Oliva and the Civil Guard collaborate in the removal of the rental vehicle near El Cotillo that rushed without a driver. With no one inside, a car fell yesterday, Monday, into the sand of the beach of Esquinzo, near El Cotillo, in the municipality of La Oliva. The Local Police of La Oliva and the Civil Guard went to the area where the rental company hoisted the vehicle with a crane.
The rental vehicle rushed to the beach due to an electronic failure, according to sources from the City council of La Oliva who specified that it was the company Cicar. The driver had parked the vehicle at the foot of the cliff and got off to access the beach. When he realized it, the car was already in the sand.
The vehicle did not leave any contamination in the sand, according to municipal sources, neither of oil nor of fuel.
Not sure, they were offroad so don't know how that affects things. And it's their word against hire company as to whether they had put handbrake on or electronic failure .... It seemed a bit quick for that statement to be made!

Just as an aside, given the comment re handbrake, I had a similar experience about 25 years ago. I’d had my latest company car, a beautiful black metallic Vauxhall Calíbra, about three weeks. My young son and I parked up on the South Downs, unloaded our bikes from the rack I’d put on the back and went off for a ride. Two hours later we returned, and no sign of the car. “Was it a black one?” asked a youngster in the car parking area. “If it was, it’s down there!”. To cut a long story short, that model had a new handbrake system. It locked up beautifully until the brakes cooled down, then released, allowing my car to roll forward and off the edge. Although Vauxhall admitted nothing, my company recovered the total cost from them without a fight….! I always park in gear now, unsurprisingly!
Yesterday afternoon a car fell from the area of the Torre del Tostón to Piedra Playa in what everything points to an accident due to an oversight by not leaving the handbrake on.
The car fell along the cliff about 20 meters high until it reached what is known as the first beach of Piedra Playa. It has not transcended but everything points to a rental car whose drivers suffered this cluelessness that would end in an accident.
In any case there were no injuries and in that sense everything remains in an anecdote, except for the suffered vehicle, of course.
