Radio Sintonia:
A rural tourism project will rehabilitate the Casa de Montelongo, in La Oliva.
The City Council of La Oliva has been able to know first-hand an ambitious project, a tourist establishment that, maintaining the essence of the construction, will rehabilitate one of the buildings with more history of the town.
In a meeting held with Raúl Ortega Santana and Francisco de Borja Juliá Blanch, responsible for this initiative, the mayor has been able to know first-hand the project and has shown her satisfaction because "once again the municipality of La Oliva is the target of an important investment that will contribute to strengthen the quality tourist offer".
Under the brand thesuites Worldwide, the promoters of this Casa Montelongo project aim to recover this property, an old building with use as a casino and housing, located in the center of the town of La Oliva, for a new tourist use with the classification of emblematic house. The project consists of two independent accommodation units, with living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom and amenities, making it a unique accommodation, characterized by exclusivity. "It's about enjoying," explain its promoters, "natural landscapes, beaches where it is easy to get lost and where the accommodation itself becomes one of the main reasons for the trip."
According to the Majorero historian, Pedro Carreño Fuentes, "the House of Montelongo sits on a plot of the old street of the Church that was later that of General Franco in memory of his visit to La Oliva in the fifties, today it receives its name from the Tababaire fountain. The house of elegant and sober design and spacious rooms, is built with materials from the area, wide walls based on stone, mud and lime, and extends to one side and the other of the street mentioned. This house is representative of the constructions carried out in the nineteenth century in La Oliva, it is a typical Canarian construction, with urban strokes and elegant stonework". "In it," Pedro Carreño continues, "in addition, one of the casinos of La Oliva where important parties took place is located and which had the protection of the House of the Colonels. This room was attended by the Marquesa Doña Nieves, as guest of honor. In those celebrations were very important the dances where people sang improvised songs that often went to the marquise, popular tradition remembers some of those couplets, although the most popular is the one they used to sing to her upon arrival: What is what shines / in the room more than the sun, / Doña Nieves del Castillo, / daughter of the Governor."
In his opinion, "heritage facilitates the discovery of ourselves and represents our collective identity, and, if we do not fight for it, if we do not leave, it does not wait. We have not known, or have not wanted, to transmit their values to the young people of today, to such an extent that they feel strange in their own land, with which they are in love, but with which they do not know almost everything, and this has its consequences. Therefore, the people who have dedicated ourselves to recovering and telling the story are very sad to see that it is not protected properly, because it is very important not to lose our origins, since those who lose their origins lose their identity.
