The Civil Guard intervenes more than 6 kilos of mussels and limpets captured in closed season in Fuerteventura.
The Civil Guard of Fuerteventura on March 24 on the occasion of the intensification of services for the protection of protected species on the aforementioned island and avoid poaching shellfish, denounced a person with a history for the same facts, for capturing a species of shellfish prohibited throughout the year such as mussels, in addition to limpets, which are also currently prohibited from being captured, in the municipality of La Oliva.
Knowledge of the facts
The Civil Guard in the exercise of its specific functions in protecting those of protected species on the aforementioned island and avoiding poaching shellfish, during the service carried out of surveillance of the coastal coast of Tindaya a person was observed in a rocky area and difficult to access which was shellfishing.
Therefore, the Civil Guards on duty when they realized that the person was leaving the place with a car, proceeded to identify the driver of the same, and being able to observe how inside it he carried in the back seat a sack and a carrycot with 2.3 kg of mussels "Perna Perna" and 4.5 Kg of Limpets.
Reportedly, the objective of the person denounced was to benefit economically through the commercialization of the captured specimens, of which their capture is prohibited, thereby further decimating the already worrying population of the species and hindering its recovery.
The Civil Guard transfers its commitment in the fight against poaching and the protection of protected species, such as the "Perna perna" Canary Mussel and the "Patella Candei" known as Majorera Macaw, which is in danger of extinction, leading to the intensification of interventions of this type to preserve the shellfish resources of the island, which are severely decimated.
The capture of the Canary Mussel is prohibited throughout the year throughout the coastal coast of Fuerteventura by the Order of July 16, 2004 (BOC nº 141 OF July 22, 2004) in which the closure of this species was established due to the worrying situation in which the species was, endangering its permanence and future development.
Infraction
As a result of the service, the Civil Guard intervened the specimens and returned them to the sea alive, processing the corresponding complaint for serious administrative infringement of article 70.3 of Law 17/2003 on Fisheries of the Canary Islands, which is sent to the Vice-Ministry of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands.
Infringements for these acts can be sanctioned with a fine of 301 to 60,000 euros, as well as the confiscation of the products or goods obtained and the equipment or tools used.
For all these reasons, the corresponding infringement of the facts described was sent to the Ministry of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands.
