Denounced a poacher with 36 kilos of fish in Corralejo.
The Civil Guard of the Maritime Detachment of Fuerteventura, in collaboration with the Fishing Guard Service belonging to the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, denounced a recreational fisherman, 43 years old and without a criminal record, for possessing the amount of about 36 kg. of varied fish in a portable refrigerator inside a vehicle. In addition, he was about to embark with his vehicle on one of the ferries that cover the Corralejo – Playa Blanca Lanzarote line.
The agents carried out the corresponding inspection of the interior of the vehicle, finding inside a portable refrigerator in which there were almost 36 kg of fish varied among old, rockers, abbots and groupers, highlighting among them one of the pieces, being a grouper of about 23 kg, being limited to 10 kg the transport of fish between islands by recreational fishermen. The pieces had been caught in the form of spearfishing, without being able to determine the area. In addition, the offender had previously been denounced for capturing unauthorized species by spearfishing in Lanzarote.
The grouper of 23 kg was deposited in the Fishermen's Association of Corralejo, waiting for the result of the diagnostic test of ciguatoxin being this microscopic marine toxin that accumulates through the food chain where smaller fish are eaten by larger fish. Thus, larger fish are those that could contain more toxin and therefore be more toxic.
This toxin is not removed by any preservation or cooking technique (freezing, marinating, smoking, fried, cooked, oven or griddledger). Accidental human consumption of species with high levels of ciguatoxin is often associated with gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and neurological problems. For this reason, prevention is essential, based on controlling at the Points of First Sale (PPV) the products of fresh extractive fish susceptible to being carriers of ciguatoxins before their incorporation into the food chain.
The susceptible species and to which the test must be carried out with weights equal to or greater than those indicated are the Medregal 13 kg, Grouper 12 kg., Pejerrey 9 kg., Abade 7 kg and Peto 35 kg. In the event that recreational fishermen catch species with weights equal to or greater than those described, it is recommended that they be taken to a laboratory for analysis or that it not be consumed.
Legislation and possible sanctions
Recreational fishing in the Canary Islands is regulated by Law 17/2003, of April 10, on fishing in the Canary Islands. In Article 70. 4.e, the capture of a quantity of fishing per person, in the form of recreational fishing, exceeding twice the maximum daily limit is included as a serious infringement. In Article 69. b) The exercise of fishing or shellfish activity without carrying the required license accompanied by a document proving identity is classified as minor infractions.
Both the Regulation of the Fisheries Law of the Canary Islands, and Royal Decree 2133/1986, of September 19, which establishes the rules to which recreational sea fishing must comply in the waters of the Spanish territorial sea corresponding to the Canary archipelago, limit the transport of catches of recreational fishing between islands. It is restricted to a maximum of ten kilograms, in several pieces of regulatory size, or in a single piece, in which case it may exceed this weight.
Serious infractions may be sanctioned with a fine of 301 to 60,000 euros, under article 76 of Law 17/2003, of April 10, on fishing in the Canary Islands, the products or goods may also be confiscated.
