Ecological Transition asks the Cabildo to put alternatives to the El Charco Power Pla

The Government of the Canary Islands asks to include new energy sites to undertake the closure of the capital's plant

The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Mariano H. Zapata, participates in the public consultation of the Special Territorial Plan of Fuerteventura (PTE) for the implementation of energy projects that involve any type of production, transformation or distribution infrastructure, carried out by the Island Council.

In it, the regional executive asks the Cabildo to definitively address the gradual closure of the El Charco power plant, in Puerto del Rosario, a matter that is not directly established in the current text. In this sense, the Ministry proposes to include this issue as another of the structuring axis of the document, adding alternative locations that respond to a historical demand of the residents of Puerto del Rosario and that is done in consensus with all administrations.

According to Minister Zapata, this is intended to achieve an ordinance that is "useful for the energy future of Fuerteventura and guarantees the security of energy supply by avoiding blackouts".

In this way, "the Plan must offer viable alternatives of new locations for energy production, transformation and distribution infrastructures, including the Zurita area and other possible ones, which will allow us to move towards a model of less polluting, smaller and more efficient plants and with a greater guarantee of electricity supply," explained Zapata.

For all this, he explained, we also propose "the creation of a monitoring commission between the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, with the aim that all the steps of this plan are aligned with the rest of the planning instruments and favor the progress towards a more sustainable model in an orderly manner and where consensus prevails".

In this sense, the Minister also stressed the importance of moving forward hand in hand with consensus with all the administrations involved, for which he also thanked the recent proposal of the Puerto del Rosario City Council in this regard. This proposal offers municipal land in Los Llanos Pelados, an area without residents, as a viable alternative for the installation of new generation centers in El Charco.

Likewise, and regarding this Plan, Minister Zapata stated that it must also "update its regulatory context, taking into account the current Climate Change and Energy Transition Law and the instruments that go with it, such as the PIECan (Integrated Energy and Climate Plan of the Canary Islands) or the ZAR (Renewable Acceleration Zones)", which are areas determined by the Government of the Canary Islands in collaboration with the island councils to install renewable energies, as preferential areas. Similarly, the Ministry has recalled, for example, that the areas authorized in the plan must contemplate more spaces than necessary in terms of renewable power to avoid speculative effects on the land offered.

Tenders to renew the power generation park

Finally, the councillor recalled that in parallel to this planning, in which the Cabildo is working, another series of milestones are being carried out in energy matters that will also have an impact on the island.

In this line, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) announced last June the tender to renew the conventional electricity generation park in the Canary Islands, something that "we have been waiting for more than ten years and that proposes a total of 971 MW of power in the Archipelago by 2028", said the minister. also highlighting that "from the Ministry we hope that this contest can be the beginning of that necessary change in the Charco".

Similarly, he wanted to emphasize that work is also being done on the emergency tender executed by the regional government, whose ultimate objective is "to strengthen the energy system of the islands with a generation deficit, as is the case of Fuerteventura and which faces real risks of energy zeros or possible blackouts".

"The Canary Islands must strengthen its energy system and must do so hand in hand with sustainability, respect for the environment and taking into account the installation of renewable energies and compliance with the penetration objectives set by the PNIEC and the Canary Islands Climate Action Strategy for our archipelago". said the minister, who finally added that "in that line, and of joint work and coordination with the rest of the administrations we will continue to work for the good of the people of Fuerteventura".
