The dangers of selfies and photos on the windward coast of Fuerteventura.

'Canary Islands, 1500 Km of Coast' warns of the dangers of taking selfies in certain areas this summer.

The Association for the Prevention of Drownings and Aquatic Accidents, 'Canarias, 1500 Km de Costa', has presented one more year the 'Decalogue to enjoy a safe summer in the water' with the basic preventive tips to avoid or know how to act in a risk situation in each scenario.

Ignoring a red flag, bathing in beaches that lack surveillance, using floats in the sea or being immersed in a 'return current' are the main risk factors that can compromise safety when interacting in any aquatic space. Recklessness can lead to drowning or other types of accidents on beaches, swimming pools, rivers and other bathing areas.

With the arrival of the summer holidays and the hottest summer in history, according to the forecasts of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), coastal areas and tourist establishments throughout the country begin to receive millions of bathers. So, to prevent an accident in the water, from the platform they ask to apply common sense and pay attention to the recommendations, and if you suffer or witness an emergency situation, always call 112.

The 'Decalogue to enjoy a safe summer in the water' includes the basic preventive tips such as avoiding bathing with a red flag. 80% of accidents at sea are caused by not respecting the color of the flag. The red flag means no bathing and is the leading cause of death by drowning. A red flag is a red light; However, the majority of the population admits to continuing to bathe ignoring the risk. Therefore, we must avoid skipping this prohibition.

Another circumstance that generates a higher mortality rate is bathing on beaches without surveillance or during the time slot in which rescue services are not active. From the platform it is warned that a deserted beach lacks a lifeguard and, sometimes, signaling, so if the safety of the bather is compromised, there will be no professional to help him. This circumstance is the third cause of death by drowning.

The 'return current' is another of the main dangers for the bather to be dragged out to sea preventing him from returning to the shore. It is the second leading cause of death by submersion. A 'return current' can have the strength of ten Olympic swimmers. Therefore, if you are in trouble and cannot get out, you do not have to fight against the current. You have to save energy and stay calm, in addition to waving your arms to be seen.

When you are going to fish in coastal points of cliffs or rocky areas, before you always have to consult the Weather forecast, the state of the sea and the wind and make sure you bring the necessary equipment that guarantees our safety before leaving home. Always wear a helmet, appropriate footwear and, above all, a life jacket.

Also, we must never forget that children are the most vulnerable to the aquatic environment. It only takes 27 seconds for a twelve-month-old baby to drown. It is also advised not to use floats in the sea. A float is not a life saver, it is a toy that inflates. Especially dangerous are those that have the shape of an animal (swans, unicorns, flamingos, etc.), since their trunk and head act as a sail effect and will drag the bather out to sea. Circular sleeves and floats have a very questionable security. Therefore, it is advisable to always get into the water with our child.

DEATH IN A MINUTE

The platform 'Canarias, 1500 Km de Costa' places special emphasis on its preventive recommendations for the elderly. Precisely, the profile of the drowned corresponds to a male between 55 and 75 years old. Therefore, it insists on being aware of the physical condition and limitations. A heart attack in the water causes death within a minute.

When practicing water sports, pay attention to the safety zone and stay away from bathers, and if you practice motor sports or sailing, always more than 200 meters from the beach or 50 meters from rocky areas. Keep in mind that the vast majority of jet ski riders in Spain lack qualifications and, worse, experience. Of course, before going out to sea you have to inform someone on land of the activity that is going to be carried out.

Enjoying a refreshing swim can be a difficulty for people with reduced mobility. People in wheelchairs, blind people or any other who present a dysfunction must take into account the different services offered by the beaches to facilitate the entry and exit of the sea. Therefore, it is recommended to go to beaches that have services for the care of people with reduced mobility. Every citizen has the right to enjoy a safe bath.

When diving you have to remember to always be accompanied and check the equipment before diving into the sea. Always dive, at least, with another person and be accompanied by a qualified professional. Also be aware of physical preparation and limitations before practicing it. And do not forget that this is a risk sport.

After a copious meal or a long time exposed to the sun you have to enter the water in moderation. Avoid exposing yourself more than half an hour in the sun and always use a cream with high sun protection.

When going to dams, rivers, water reservoirs or ponds in mountain areas, you must first make sure that bathing is allowed and take into account that fresh water has less buoyancy than salt water, so it is advisable to use vests or elements that help us float.

SELFIES, THE LATEST LIKE

Pretending to immortalize the moment by taking a selfie or self-photo in front of the coast, especially on cliffs or rocky areas, is becoming a fashion with more and more followers and, consequently, expose yourself to suffer an accident. And if it is with strong waves due to its spectacularity, the chances of suffering a more serious mishap are even multiplied, given the urgency with which it is intended to do it to guarantee the spectacularity of the image.

When going to the pool, keep in mind that the sinks may lack a lid or grid, leaving them exposed, which represents a special danger for minors. The suction force of a sump is sufficient to absorb a person, causing serious injury or even death. Therefore, parents and / or guardians are asked to always enter the water with children.

Children's curiosity and restlessness is astonishing but unpredictable. When a child disappears, especially if he is between 2 and 6 years old, where he should first look is in the bodies of water. A private pool or the fountain of a park are clear examples of danger points for a child who does not know how to swim and falls by accident. A few centimeters of water and just 1 minute are enough for a child to drown. Never lose sight of them.
