Feed stores running low on islands
#1
from Radio Sintonia:

The Association of Farmers and Ranchers warns that the feed mills of the islands are in a critical situation.

The Association of Farmers and Ranchers (ASAGA Canarias ASAJA) warns that the feed factories of the islands are in a critical and worrying situation due to the impossibility of importing cereals and other additives (carbonate and correctors), necessary for the elaboration of the rations of the animals, due to the strike of transport of goods that already adds its fourth day in the Peninsula. The mobilizations have been accompanied by violent acts that are taking place, on the part of the strikers, to prevent the circulation of minimum services, which is causing a significant blockade of agri-food products in the ports of departure.

Feed manufacturers say that, due to storage limitations on the islands, they only have stock for a week and that, if they continue, with this shortage of raw materials, they will be forced to close immediately with the "dire" consequences that would lead to local livestock, their welfare, the health of animals, as well as human consumption.

Given this fact, ASAGA Canarias urges the State and the Regional Executive to take the appropriate measures, as quickly and forcefully as possible, to unblock the exit from the peninsular ports and guarantee the supply of these inputs that, not only affects animal feed, but also human as it already happens with products such as milk, fruits, vegetables and fish.

Ángela Delgado, president of this professional agricultural organization, states that: "unfortunately our high dependence on the outside makes the Canary Islands a more vulnerable territory, even if possible, in circumstances such as the current ones. Not only is it a serious economic damage throughout the value chain, from the primary sector, industry and distribution, but it endangers our food supply."

ASAGA Canarias stresses that the current scenario is beginning to be unsustainable for companies in the sector that, in addition to suffering a regular shortage, suffer from the increase in the price of raw materials, the energy crisis and the high price of fuels, which is why the strike has been triggered. "Demonstrating is a right, but it cannot go hand in hand with violent acts that paralyze minimum services. The government has to stand firm and resolve this conflict now."

Support for the banana sector
ASAGA Canarias supports the decision of banana producers in the Canary Islands not to pick fruit from this week in the face of the blockade that distribution in the Peninsula is experiencing. Likewise, this professional agricultural organization also demands that the Ministry of Agriculture enable the necessary safeguard measures so that the activity is not paralyzed for a longer time and thus avoids an economic bankruptcy of the sector.
