Ferries and rental cars - a few questions
#1
Hi all,

We are hoping to fly to Tenerife in March but visit La Gomera and El Hierro. The easiest way to get around (and the cheapest as residents) is to hire a rental car for the 5-6 days.

3 questions:

1. Do CICAR/others allow you to take the car to different islands (I suspect yes?)
2. Are all ferry companies happy to take hire cars? (I suspect yes, again)
3. How can you book a ferry in advance if you don't have the registration/exact make of hire car in advance?

Thanks folks.
Bill

I am not sure the car hire companies are keen on island hopping. About 7 years ago, I hired a car from Cicar and asked if I could go over to Lanzarote. The answer was a very firm NO!

They suggested I leave the car at the port, then hired another once the ferry had arrived in Lanzarote.

Rules may well have changed since then, so ask them.

As for booking the ferry, I think you will have to book it after collecting the hire car.

Thanks Tom, good to know and I will definitely ask.

The issue of course with booking the ferry on the day is that you're a bit of a hostage to fortune in case you can't get over to one of the smaller islands that day (with Air B'n'B/whatever booked) . I'm guessing in early March they shouldn't be too busy...
