Radio Sintonia:
First vascular surgery bypass at the General Hospital of Fuerteventura.
The General Hospital of Fuerteventura, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, recently carried out the first bypass in the area of vascular surgery. This surgical intervention, carried out in collaboration with specialists from the Angiology and Vascular Surgery service of the Maternal and Child Insular University Hospital Complex of Gran Canaria, represents an important advance in health care in Fuerteventura and reinforces the commitment of the Management of the Majorero Health Services with excellence and innovation in the field of vascular surgery.
Bypass in vascular surgery is a highly specialized intervention that involves the creation of a shunt (with a synthetic or biological substitute) to restore blood flow to an artery, usually obstructed, totally or partially, by arteriosclerotic disease. This technique allows to restore adequate circulation and relieve the symptoms associated with vascular diseases of ischemic origin.
As it was transferred, the close collaboration between the managements of both hospitals has been decisive when it comes to having an increasingly broad coverage of patients in Fuerteventura with diseases of vascular origin.
In fact, as in other specialties such as Thoracic Surgery or Neurosurgery, the General Hospital of Fuerteventura has the presence of a vascular surgeon from Gran Canaria who regularly consults and carries out vascular interventions such as varicose vein surgery and surgical vascular accesses for hemodialysis, avoiding, in this way, displacements of patients and their families to Gran Canaria, which results in a better quality of life for these people.
The upcoming opening of the Hemodynamics room of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura will be an important advance both for the realization of cardiac catheterizations both diagnostic and therapeutic (placement of coronary stents) as well as the endovascular interventions that will be carried out by the vascular surgeons coordinated by the Angiology and Vascular Surgery service of the Insular-Maternal and Child University Hospital Complex.
Both interventions, as well as the aforementioned bypass surgery, will contribute positively to avoid many displacements of patients and relatives and to a considerable reduction in waiting lists.
The Health Services Management of the Fuerteventura Health Area continues to invest in cutting-edge technology and specialized training to provide patients on the island with state-of-the-art medical services.
