More than 83 million passengers since 1974.
Fred. Olsen Express celebrated, last weekend, 49 years attending to the maritime connectivity of the Canary Islands. Since it began its activity in 1974, more than 83 million people have trusted the company to travel to their destination.
The shipping company, which in 2024 will reach half a century, currently operates 5 inter-island routes; a coastal route in La Gomera, which connects the ports of the Columbian island by sea, and another that connects the archipelago with Huelva. In addition, it has a fleet of 10 boats, among which are the trimarans 'Bajamar Express' and 'Bañaderos Express', state-of-the-art vessels unique in the Canary Islands, and a new miniferry under construction.
For the fleet director of the company, Juan Ignacio Liaño, "having the opportunity to live the 49th anniversary of the shipping company is, for all the people who are part of this great family, a reason for joy. It means that several generations have trusted and continue to trust us for their movements. Only last year, they traveled with Fred. Olsen Express more than ?three million ??? of passengers and one million vehicles. These figures reflect the value of the service we provide and the social work we perform. Without a doubt, we are very grateful to all our passengers, because thanks to them Fred. Olsen Express has come this far."
La Gomera, where it all began
The company began sailing in the waters of the Canary Islands on July 8, 1974, with the inauguration of the ferry that linked San Sebastián de La Gomera and Los Cristianos, in Tenerife. A route of which the oldest employees and residents of La Gomera of the time, treasure emotional memories. Not only was it the beginning of the activity, but it also had a great social component, since it provided service connecting both islands for leisure, work, management, medical issues or emergencies. Subsequently, after the consolidation of the route, the expansion of the shipping company to the entire archipelago was given.
Today, 49 years after its inception, Fred. Olsen Express continues to operate with the aim of providing its travelers with the greatest comfort, punctuality and quality in its service. Maintaining its commitment to guarantee maritime connectivity in the archipelago and contributing to the development of Canarian society. In this way, the shipping company promotes the stimulation of the regional economy with the generation of more than 1,000 direct jobs and other indirect jobs, through the contracting of services.
The company is continuously committed to investment and the development of projects that have an impact on different social areas. For example, this year it has extended its AENOR Universal Accessibility certification to its entire fleet and facilities, positioning itself as the most accessible maritime transport company nationwide. Likewise, it continues to develop and implement initiatives focused on environmental sustainability and the conservation of marine life, being the most committed shipping company in this regard, with more than 70 initiatives and measures that come together in the project 'In Harmony with the Sea'.
Its zero-paper policy; The elimination of single-use plastics on board, an action with which it has been possible to reduce up to 6.2 tons of plastic per year or the prioritization of the local economy and the products of Km 0 to supply its shops and cafes, are just some of the initiatives it has underway.
On the occasion of his anniversary, Fred. Olsen Express has set out to continue improving the service and travel experience for its passengers. It has recently included new pet-friendly accommodations for pets to enjoy on board with their families. It also began last May the construction of a new miniferry, with an option for a second twin, which will have capacity for 250 passengers.
