Pájara studies the relocation of the competition 'Fuerte Action Windsurfing Speed World Championship' before the qualification of Punta Salinas Beach as a 'natural space', the Institution and the organizing company shuffle other options with the same conditions that avoid possible consequences for the environment.
The City Council of Pájara and the organizing company of the world competition 'Fuerte Action Windsurfing Speed World Championship' have met today to assess the relocation of the sports event in a new environment of the southern coast.
The Councilor for Sports, Manuel Rodríguez, explained that "the competition was going to take place from June 30 to July 4 at Punta Salinas Beach. Given the qualification of this environment as a 'natural space' and with the aim of avoiding possible consequences for the environment of the municipality, the local institution and the organizing company are considering other options that meet the same conditions to celebrate the championship ".
The mayor of Pájara, Pedro Armas, added that, "for the purposes of this meeting, as soon as possible the final decision and the final location where the windsurfing competition will be held will be communicated."
"Our intention is to promote sport and host first-class championships like this, while taking into account at any time the protection of our natural environment, our coastline and our environment," concluded the councilor.

The Association of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs of Fuerteventura "Excelfuert" regrets in a statement issued this afternoon the cancellation of the Windsurfing World Championship and call on the City Council of Pájara and the Island Council to adopt an urgent solution that guarantees its recovery and inclusion in the world Calendar of 2023.
The suspension of this year's edition was more than predictable given the passivity and the absence of effective responses that would allow the celebration of the event that, until now, has generated the greatest promotional impact of the island of Fuerteventura.
Excelfuert considers it inadmissible that "neither the City Council of Pájara nor the Cabildo of Fuerteventura have been able to fulfill their obligations to carry out a championship that, during its more than twenty years of history, has represented the main window of promotion of the island, with return figures that would be impossible to pay with public economic resources".
"We have lost," they add, "at the worst moment, in the midst of the relaunch of the tourism sector after the pandemic, the celebration of a championship that, year after year, has reported large revenues to the island of Fuerteventura. We do not understand the reasons why a competition that is a world reference in the world of windsurfing and that has allowed the island to be national and international news for many years has been left to die".
Excelfuert stresses that "the damage is already irreparable. Both the accommodation plant and the hospitality sector will pay the consequences of the abandonment of the institutions and the cancellation of the championship. We do not understand that, after the pandemic, when Events and incentives are most needed for the recovery of the sector, we find ourselves in an undesirable situation for the island."
The businessmen call on the institutions to "convene an emergency meeting, in which the representatives of the tourism sector are present, to define a strategy that offers all the guarantees and that allows a serious and responsible roadmap for the recovery of the championship and the consolidation of the main economic pillar of the island, which is tourism"
"The current tourist arrival figures are optimistic, but there are several factors, including inflation and international instability, that suggest that there will be a cooling of the economy and a significant risk of global recession. We have to be prepared and we cannot afford to miss Events like the windsurfing world championship.", they conclude.

Meliá affirms that without the authorizations serious responsibilities can be incurred "in the event of any eventuality".
In a statement received in the newsroom of this medium this afternoon Meliá Hotels International and the René Egli School intends to get out of the way of the statements made by municipal representatives regarding the decision of the City of Pájara to cancel the 2022 edition of the World Championship of Windsurfing and Kitesurfing, "which by inaccurate, could lead to unfair conclusions for two companies that, for decades, they have shown the greatest commitment to the Island of Fuerteventura and its institutions," the note states.
"Without wanting to value the statements in question, much less question our confidence in the word of our esteemed municipal institutions, the objective of this Communiqué is none other than to basically state that the line of the meetings held since the beginning (February 10) were based on the interest of our part that the World Championship be held this year, and assuming René Egli as every year, all the organization of the sports part of the event. But also from the first meeting we insist on the importance for us of obtaining all the necessary permits and authorizations to be able to sign the agreement with the City of Pájara, "they explain in relation to the situation of the event.
Lack of permissions
"As we indicated at the time to the City Council, and at the request of the Legal Department of our company, in the absence of all the mandatory Permits required by the Administration itself, (specifically, those of the Demarcation of Coasts and Maritime Captaincy), it was impossible for us to sign the Contract with the City of Pájara. Without these reports, as the Consistory knows, the company cannot commit to the international sports associations that have the licenses for the realization of the championships, and that requires a significant disbursement of funds that would not be recoverable in case finally, due to not having the relevant permits, the Championship could not be carried out, " explains the company's note.
In this sense, the company affirms that "beyond the above, also clarify that the realization of the Championship, without yet having such authorizations, whose possibility has been suggested by the municipal representatives, in addition to supposing an administrative infraction could lead to incuring serious, civil or criminal responsibilities before any possible eventuality, responsibilities that it is our obligation to avoid."
Thanks to the PWA and GKA
The company remembers the organizers of the world championship tests of both specialties and affirm that "therefore, we want above all to state that we are devastated by the decision to cancel the Fuerteventura 2022 Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World Championship. We should mention a special thank you to the PWA and GKA associations for their understanding, support, loyalty and willingness throughout this process." "Last Monday we transferred to the City of Pájara the latest proposal of the PWA based on postponing the event for a few days, thus trying to gain time for the arrival of the authorizations and all the necessary permits to sign the contract and that the parties had time to organize it, a proposal to which we have not obtained a response, " Explain.
They reach out to keep helping
"On the other hand, we reject that Meliá or René Egli has omitted any effort to try to reorganize an event as desired by us as the World Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Championship, and we confess that we find the suggestion of lack of interest or diligence on our part alien and incomprehensible, and much less, of confidence in a Consistory that has been our ally in the organization of the World Championship, uninterruptedly, for 34 years, only interrupted by the COVID pandemic. Despite the possible misunderstandings, we extend our hand and put ourselves at the disposal of the City of Pájara to redirect the situation, this year or next year, activating the procedures with sufficient anticipation to avoid this type of circumstances in the future, "ends the note.
Tamara: 2 different 'world' windsurfing/kitesurfing Events were/are due to take place this summer. I haven't been able to ascertain which or both of these are cancelled. My apologies if I have added these News items to the wrong event!
