Fuerteventura Airport has carried out today a general simulation of air accidents, included in its Self-Protection Plan, where the activation and response times of the airport's security services were analyzed, as well as coordination with external aid media.
The objective of the drill is to guarantee the protection of human lives and property that could be affected by an incident of this type, to ensure the continuity or restoration of airport operations and to increase the confidence of the teams and people involved in this type of situation.
The exercise has simulated the accident with fire of a Boeing 737 8MAX-200 aircraft, with 16 passengers and 4 crew on board, which was transporting dangerous goods, in addition to 9 tons of fuel.
Upon observing the accident, Control Tower (TWR) presses the warning alarm to the Rescue and Fire Extinguishing Service (SSEI), which goes to the scene of the accident and communicates what happened to the Operations Center, activating the Airport Emergency Plan. The Main and Advanced Command Post are established, external help is requested from the health and firefighting services and the State Security Forces and Corps are alerted.
During the development of the drill, the Territorial Civil Protection Plan of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA) is activated and the emergency command is transferred between the airport management and the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies.
Once the fire is extinguished, the arrival of the ambulances and the care and transfer to hospital centers of the affected passengers are coordinated. The final death toll is 5 dead (including 2 crew members), 7 seriously or very seriously injured (including also 2 crew members) and 8 people with minor injuries or unharmed. The room for minor injuries or unharmed is activated to welcome passengers who are stable and provide them with assistance, as well as the family room to attend to the relatives of the people involved in the accident. Once the situation is controlled and the area declared safe, the command posts end the drill.
Participating groups
In addition to the staff of Aena and the companies that usually work and collaborate at the Airport, the General State Administration, Civil Guard, National Police, Civil Protection of the Delegation of the Government of the Canary Islands, Local Police of Puerto del Rosario and Antigua, Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), CECOES 112, Firefighters of Puerto del Rosario, Army, Red Cross, Insular Hospital of Fuerteventura, General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, Cabildo of Fuerteventura (and its firefighters), Civil Protection of Puerto del Rosario and teachers of the CIEF Majada Marcial.
With this exercise, Fuerteventura Airport complies with the regulations of the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) and the regulations of the European Union regarding emergency planning, where all the procedures of action are collected, as well as the protocols to request external help and coordinate it.
