Under the motto The festival of books turns 30 years old. Readers, books and writers , the Council of Culture of the Cabildo, through the Insular Library Center, already works on a program that will include more than thirty activities where the book, the readers and the booksellers will share a leading role.
The program of this edition includes meetings with authors, a new meeting of the writer and you cycle, book presentations, poetic-musical recitals, writing workshops, storytelling, theatre, circus and dance performances. Also, one more year the Train of the stories, heading to the Festival of Books will unite the neighbourhoods of the capital through the word with a journey by train with oral narrators that will culminate in the Book Fair.
According to the president of the Cabildo, Marcial Morales, "the Book Fair has been consolidated over time, with attractive activities for all types of audiences, with the aim of creating and consolidating readers on the Island, which is the slogan with the one that this Institution moves all the activity that revolves around the book ".
"We continue to work in the effort to convert the majority of the population of the Island into readers, in an event that includes innovative spaces, such as meetings between writers and writers with their reading public," adds Morales.
The Minister of Culture, Juan Jiménez, emphasizes that "readers are the reason why literature advances, the end of a written work, the recipients of the publication of a creative process. For this reason, thirty years of the Insular Book Fair deserve to be dedicated to what really gives it meaning: readers, books and writers ".
For Jiménez, the Book Fair "symbolizes culture in its highest expression. It is the event that best defines the impetus of any administration to promote the culture of its closest environment ".
Last edition, the Insular Book Fair broke records of attendance and sale of books. In an edition in which music and literature shared the stage, the Fair brought together more than a thousand people and sold a thousand books. Authors such as Elvira Lindo, Antonio Lozano, Alexis Ravelo, Juan Soto Ivars, Antonio Pampliega, Manuel Vilas, Felipe Benitez Reyes and Pedro Flores, among others, shared space with musical performances such as Niño de Elche or Paco Cifuentes.
The Book Fair of Fuerteventura began in 1987, although it was not held in two editions. That first fair emerged as an initiative of the Popular University, with the aim of bringing the book closer to the population of Majorera through various Events such as theatre, exhibitions and book presentations. Four book stores and three publishers participated in that first meeting that was held in the vicinity of the Church of the capital.
