Twenty-three municipalities of the Canary Islands have seen lower population numbers so far this century in rural areas. This decrease contrasts with the southern areas and tourist locations that account for the largest growth in population across the archipelago.
All Canary Islands have increased their population over the last 20 years, except La Palma, which shows a loss of population. Over this period, many municipalities in interior locations and rural areas have also lost inhabitants. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote have significantly increased their population numbers since 2000, and have doubled their populations with 106,000 new residents. Also in Fuerteventura in Betancuria, there is a paradox. This is the municipality had the least population of the Canary Islands in 2018 with 713 inhabitants, but had registered an increase of residents since 2017. This reflects that in Fuerteventura some rural towns have increased their populations in recent years, and contrasts the trends of other islands. This anomaly contrasts with the northwest region of Tenerife, where four municipalities have reduced populations. In Mogan in Gran Canaria, which is a tourist municipality in the south, there has been a loss of 4,500 inhabitants in just six years, which translates into less political representation in future elections. Fuerteventura's population continues to increase and exceeds 116,000 inhabitants for the first time, with a growth of 3.2%, which means that the island reaches 116,886 residents according to the data of the Canary Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
In the last year, the population registered on the island, increased by 3,106 people. The municipality that experienced the greatest growth, in percentage terms, was Antigua, with 4.3%, and an increase of 513 inhabitants. Puerto del Rosario was the one that increased the most in absolute terms with 1,371 people, 3.5% more. Pájara and La Oliva municipalities have increased by 2.7%, which is 696 more people in La Oliva and 554 in Pájara. Puerto del Rosario has 40,753 residents, increasing its population by 1,371 people. With 2.7 percent more than the previous year, La Oliva has 26,580 residents, and 21,093 people reside in Pájara. Antigua has 12,461 residents, 4.3% percent more, which translates into 513 new inhabitants. 15,241 people live in Tuineje, 3% more , these 450 being new inhabitants. In Betancuria there are 758 residents, with an increase of 3.7 percent, with 27 new inhabitants. So far this century, the population has increased significantly in Fuerteventura. In the year 2000 there were 60,124 people and 103,000 in 2010. Fuerteventura's population has almost doubled in the last 20 years. The article: https://noticiasfuerteventura.com/fuerte...G92oXBbwOA It would be interesting to know how ISTAC compile their statistics. They must use stats that they get from people who are registered residents. There must be a lot of people who are not registered, plus those who have holiday homes here. I'm not sure how up to date the lists of people who are registered are. The local Police did come to our house 18 months ago to check we are still here as we are on the Ayuntamiento's empadromamiento. Do they dod this foe everyone?

With Brexit looming it may be that a number of people have legalised their position here and registered, so perhaps not so many extra bodies, just more on the registers! Although I have to say the island does seem to be getting fuller and fuller, especially of cars!

An interesting article about expected population growth on the island:
https://www.diariodefuerteventura.com/noticia/la-poblaci%C3%B3n-residente-en-fuerteventura-llegar%C3%A1-los-164338-personas-en-el-a%C3%B1o-2033 A translation: The population resident in Fuerteventura will reach 164,338 people in the year 2033 A report of the Economic and Social Council highlights the exponential increase in the population of foreign origin, which would increase from 28.3% to 48.1% Fuerteventura Diary 0 COMMENTS 02/10/2020 - 09:21 A report published by the Canary Islands Economic and Social Council shows population growth figures of 45% in Fuerteventura until 2033. Thus, according to the study 'National strategy against the demographic challenge', the Island would pass from the current 116,557 residents to 164,338 in the aforementioned year 2033. The sequence of growth would go to about 130,000, in 2023; more than 143,000 in 2027; and 157,000 in 2031. As for the foreign population, based on the 2018 figure in Fuerteventura of 32,112 people, and according to the forecast of the study, in 2033 the foreigners would amount to 79,069 people. This is 146% more than the current foreign population. The foreign population would represent in 2033, 48% of the total. By age, in 2018 the majority of residents in Fuerteventura concentrated on the range between 37 and 47 years. The average age of the population of the Island is 38.4 years, with the female population being 48.4% of the total population. Foreigners currently account for 28.3% of the total number of residents, and it is mainly concentrated between 32 and 44 years, the average age being 40 years. However, and according to the population pyramid of the study, in the year 2033 the largest number of residents on the Island would be concentrated between 52 and 62 years old, that is about 15 years older than now. The average age of the resident population would be 43.8 years, 5.4 years more than in 2018. For its part, the female population will account for 49.9% of the total, increasing its weight by reducing mortality. The foreign population would account for 48.1% (19.8% more than in 2018) of the total population, and would be concentrated mainly between 30 and 60 years. More foreigners and less Spanish Another of the conclusions of the study refers to the profile of the new population, in the 2018-2032 period. While the vegetative growth will be about 444 people a year, residents who arrive from abroad will be mostly foreigners, while that of other Spanish regions will be progressively reduced. The migratory balance between Fuerteventura and the other Canary Islands is expected to be about 95 people less each year. On the other hand, in 2018 the balance between born and deceased was 398 people in favour of births, while in 2032 this balance is expected to amount to 463 more people. Finally, the report also provides data on the dependency rate, which would increase from 36.4% in 2018 to 46.0% in 2033, 9.6 percentage points more.
