Gran Canaria opens the first floating wind turbine in Spain.
The wind turbine occupies 60% less space and can power 20,000 homes.
The prototype of the X30 floating wind turbine that is tested on the Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands, off the coast of Gran Canaria, has produced the first kilowatt / hour that is generated in Spain within a wind system.
This device is developed by the Spanish company X1 Wind, reduces the environmental footprint, is passively oriented with the wind by rotating around an anchor point, reduces costs, occupies less space in the sea and can give electricity to 20,000 homes thanks to its turbines of more than 15 megawatts.
Álex Raventos (CEO of X1 Wind) points out to EFE that "the Canary Islands have ideal conditions for offshore wind, in addition to an exceptional wind (the best in Europe) that can reduce generation costs. In addition, ports have a specialized supply chain that has historically worked on oil rig maintenance."
On the other hand, this wind turbine inaugurates the testing phase after obtaining the approval in real operating conditions before making its launch official.
Good expectations
The facility can be a European test bed for any type of renewable technology, because Gran Canaria is home to the only marine area with high potential for wind energy defined by the Ministry of Ecological Transition.
José Joaquín Hernández Brito (director of the Plocan network) stressed to EFE that "it is only necessary to develop technologies and not depend on the outside. We are in luck because a Spanish technology has obtained European funding to successfully install the prototype and demonstrate that this technology is viable".
"In the Canary Islands, energy can be used in a sustainable, ecological and efficient way in compatibility with other uses of the marine environment in deep waters and sufficiently far from the coast".
