Radio Sintonia:
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, a sanctuary with more than 200 years in La Matilla.
The island of Fuerteventura has a wide range of buildings and historical monuments, among them is the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Socorro (La Matilla). Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Historic-Artistic Monument of interest to the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, Order of July 2, 1993, by which publicity is given to the Agreement of December 13, 1990.
A sanctuary in La Matilla
The hermitage is located in the payment of La Matilla, t.m. of Puerto del Rosario. On the fifth of August 1714 the hermitage of Our Lady of Socorro was blessed, erected at the request of the neighbors to found and endow the town of La Matilla with its own sanctuary. It was built within the parish jurisdiction of La Oliva to which it belonged until 1792, when Bishop Tavira added it to the parish of Tetir. The hermitage underwent different remodeling and maintenance works throughout its history. The building had two sacristies, but the deterioration suffered in the hermitage in general and in the sacristies in particular, caused that around the year 1829 one of the sacristies was rebuilt (possibly it is now when the second is abandoned), and the hermitage is enabled with the appropriate works to celebrate worship again.
Building structure
The hermitage has a rectangular floor plan on the outside, covered with a three-sided tile and sacristy attached to the wall of the epistle with a flat roof. On the main façade, facing west, the access door opens, in a semicircular arch. The upper central part of the façade houses the belfry, with a single hole where the bell is placed, topped by a small wooden cross. In the stonework of the belfry there is an inscription that reads 1902.
Delimitation
Defined by the following boundaries: to the north, with Camino de La Matilla; to the south, with side of the square that overlooks the Camino de La Matilla; to the source, with Camino de La Matilla and to the west, with the side of the square that overlooks the Camino de La Matilla.
