Hospital Puerto del Rosario
Radio Sintonia:

The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, reported today in the Parliamentary Committee that the new Radiation Oncology Unit of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura will become operational, if the planned schedule is met, in the second quarter of 2022.
It is estimated that during the second half of December, after the approval of the relevant permits, the installation of the accelerator will begin, this work will last approximately one month. From this moment, the calibration of the equipment will begin, which entails an average time of two to four months, which could be extended up to five months depending on the availability of specialists in Medical Physics.
The expected start date of this service is set for the second quarter of 2022, a date that will be conditioned to the availability of specialized personnel, medical physicists and radiotherapy technicians.
Approximately 120 patients a year will receive comprehensive treatment in the new Radiation Oncology Unit of Fuerteventura, which represents 80% of cancer patients on the island. The rest, depending on the type of process or the need for specific equipment and a very high level of specialization, will continue to be attended to at the reference center.
It was last August when the General Directorate of Economic Resources of the SCS formalized the contract for the acquisition, installation and maintenance of radiation oncology equipment, for an amount of 4,302,150 euros, for which the installation authorization has been requested from the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN).
