La Casa de los Coroneles , in La Oliva (Fuerteventura) has begun a new stage as a cultural space , by hosting a multidisciplinary program of a stable nature that includes concerts, screenings of the Canary Film Library, dance, workshops and children's activities .

The Deputy Minister of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Juan Márquez , presented this Tuesday, at a press conference, the new program for the Coroneles' house, a building almost 400 years old that was restored in 2005 by the Government of the Canary Islands and in which has been programming exhibitions of Canarian artists since then.

During his speech, Márquez pointed out that the Vice-Ministry of Culture has considered turning the house into a “cultural benchmark for the entire Canary Islands and, at the same time, generating a stable program in a space that offers the potential to program all kinds of activities multidisciplinary with a program that takes into account the cultural fabric of the island, its creative industries and the talent of its artists ”.

The deputy councillor has recognized that it is “a complicated time when programming, but the best help that can be given to the cultural sector of the Canary Islands is to reprogram and recover cultural activity and for this the Casa de los Coroneles is going to become a reference in that sense ”, while he has advocated for“ decentralizing ”culture beyond the two capital islands so that the Casa de los Coroneles“ allows us to develop that objective ”.

The initiative is based on the idea of turning the Casa de los Coroneles into an open space that offers activities of various cultural disciplines that are of interest to spectators of different ages and tastes, especially thinking of the local public and also of visitors.

In the musical sphere, the central patio of the House will be the scene of the live concerts, with a capacity of 50 spectators or more depending on the evolution of the sanitary recommendations.

The program includes a concert on the first Saturday of each month , at 12.30 pm, which will feature local groups and artists, an initiative that aims to contribute to highlighting the music that is made on the island. The next ones will be in charge of the Crazy Goats group, (November 11) and La Gaveta (December 5).

On the other hand, on the second Saturday of the month there will also be space for music, this time in the afternoon with groups from other islands or from outside the archipelago.

Among the scheduled artists are Abraham Cupeiro (November 14), the Insular School of Music (November 21) and the pianist Ignacio Clemente (December 12), to which is added the innovative multidisciplinary show 'Kairós', a dialogue between dance and music, and among the artists and the public that can be seen on December 19.

Also included in this section are the 'Commented Auditions' workshops, a journey through the history of music, aimed at all audiences and of all ages, regardless of whether or not they have prior knowledge of music.

In the field of cinema, since September, Los Coroneles has been the new screening venue for the Filmoteca Canaria, where the public can access films and documentaries in their original versions, which do not reach commercial circuits.

With a very limited capacity at the moment, this week begins the cycle '100 years of Korean Cinema', some of whose titles have already been screened in Tenerife and Gran Canaria with great public success, organized after the worldwide repercussion of the Oscar-winning film 'Parasites'.

This October there will also be a new activity: 'The sky at your fingertips' , consisting of a night session of astronomical observation from the terrace of the building, which will be preceded by a conference in which some milestones of what will be possible will be advanced see below and the art workshops 'Re-vueltxs' and the children's sessions 'La Casa de los Coroneles Cuenta' will also follow.

For his part, the director of the space, Alejandro Vitaubet has announced the upcoming exhibitions, among which are 'a painting exhibition by José Betancort and a photography by Marta Torrecilla, which will be joined by a training program in 2020 "aimed at to promote contemporary arts from the point of view of artistic technique ”.

From Radio Sintonia:

The House of the Colonels will close temporarily for rehabilitation works.
The House of the Colonels is preparing to start the rehabilitation works. This eighteenth-century building located in La Oliva (Fuerteventura), dependent on the Government of the Canary Islands, will remain closed to the public in the coming months in order to undertake the necessary improvement works in a historic building like this, declared BIC more than four decades ago and also functions as a cultural center open to citizens. A temporary closure planned for the coming weeks, but that is advanced due to the detection of new signs of deterioration inevitable by the passage of time.

However, the Casa de los Coroneles will continue with its program of activities, which will be transferred to other spaces such as the Raíz del Pueblo Association (La Oliva), a regular collaborator of the center, and other municipalities of Fuerteventura. In this sense, the theater of the aforementioned association will host on Wednesday, March 9, the illustration workshop "This stereotype is not my type"; on Thursday 10 the screening of the film "A kind of family", within the Argentine Film Cycle organized by the Canarian Film Library, and the mosaic workshop; while on Saturday, March 12, the concert "Aguayro", by Alba Aceytuno, will be held.

The rehabilitation project of the Casa de los Coroneles proposes the stabilization of the lateral towers of the building, after detecting a structural crack in the east tower, due to a settlement of the clay soil, which advises an action as immediate as possible.

This intervention includes treatment of the exceptional carpentry of the building and the humidity of its walls, as well as the consolidation and reinforcement of land and facades, repair of damages, renovation work and replacement of luminaires, among other actions of this type of work.

The House of the Colonels, construction of the second half of the seventeenth century attributed to Ginés de Cabrera Bethencourt, is a majestic building representative of power, which took as a model the Canarian domestic housing of urban centers, typical of the Modern Age, and that has reached our days as one of the most relevant architectural pieces of the artistic heritage of the Canary Islands.
Also known in the municipality of La Oliva as "Casa de la Marquesa", it is, without a doubt, the most representative building in the area. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1979, its current appearance is due to the intervention that occurred between 2005 and 2006, when it was inaugurated as we know it now.
