A question if anyone can answer it.
I was in a bar last evening and on the outside terrace, one of the local parties were holding a meeting, after which they handed out vouchers for a free drink to everyone that was registered to vote, surely this is tantamount to bribery? or am I overreacting?

In the UK John that would be an offence known as entreatment for which there are serious penalties, including the loss of the seat they may have won. However, this is Spain!!

I was told that, if you are registered to vote but don't actually do so, then your vote goes to the incumbent party as you are deemed to be happy with them. Does anyone know if this is fact or fiction?

I've just asked a Spanish friend on the mainland - she says correct!! (But she is not an official)
She's just followed up with:
Apparently thats what happens in the local elections.Your vote goes to party in power at that moment. Not for national elections.

Just spoken to a friend, who is a candidate tomorrow in Antigua and she checked with her party. Not true, she says, no vote is a no vote and isn't counted.

Its been quite interesting, one of the parties sent me "stuff" in English, and then one of their team turned up this morning very politely wanting to know if I intended to vote and did I need a hand to the polling station (a whole 400 metres away!)
I said I really didn,t know the system so I received a quick lesson.
I duly went and was amazed how many local politicos I knew.
Actually an illuminating day and I refused to divulge whom I actually voted for.
