Radio Sintonia:

Teguerey arbequina-hojiblanca, the best extra virgin olive oil in the Canary Islands 2024.

The Arbequina-Hojiblanca oil, from the Teguerey brand, from Fuerteventura, produced by Luis Hernández Santana, has been recognized as the best in the Canary Islands in the Official Agrocanarias 2024 EVOO Competition, organized by the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA) to distinguish and promote the best productions of the archipelago. This was announced today, Friday 23 February, by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, and the director of the ICCA, Luis Arráez Guadalupe, at the reading of the jury's decision.

The event had the participation of 28 productions from 17 oil mills, which represents an increase of 75% compared to the previous year. These are distributed in 13 from Fuerteventura (eight companies), six from Gran Canaria (three companies), four from Tenerife (two companies), three from La Palma (two companies), one from El Hierro (one company) and one from Lanzarote (one company).

The tasting panel, made up of eleven tasters, specialists in the analysis of agri-food products, awarded the silver medal to Antojo Majorero arbequina/picual (Fuerteventura), prepared by Cabrera y Cabrera S.A. The gold medal was awarded to Finca Soliviento (Fuerteventura) arbequina/picual/hojiblanca, made by Adrian Derk John Sparrow. Palma Oliva (La Palma) picual/arbequina, made by Juan José Santos Cabrera, received the grand gold medal, and the special distinction for best image and presentation went to Finca El Refugio, from Lanzarote, made by Flower Power Jardines S.A.

Councillor Narvay Quintero stressed that this edition of the contest registered a record of participation, a fact that shows the consolidation of the contest as an instrument of promotion and the importance that this crop has gained in recent years, which has seen its production triple from 2012 to 2022 by going from 411 to 1,326 tons of olives. "We continue to promote this sector, which produces excellent quality oils, through measures such as Agrocanarias and the creation of an olive oil registry, which we are already working on. It is important to recognize the work of producers, whose dedication is essential for the growth and excellence of our agri-food industry," he added.

For his part, the director of the ICCA announced that the oils awarded in this edition will participate in the tasting and master class organized by the Institute within the framework of the World Olive Exhibition fair to be held next week in Madrid, an event that is a meeting point between buyers and producers from all over the world. which seek to consolidate their business and open new markets.

The competition was governed by a blind tasting system, where the jury evaluated the samples without knowing which brand they are tasting. In the olfactory phase, the intensity of the aromas and the fruitiness (green or ripe) were assessed. In the gustatory aspect, the combination or harmony of the flavors is taken into account: sweet, bitter, spicy, etc., as well as other aspects such as astringency.

With this award, the Teguerey brand has six recognitions as Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil of the Canary Islands for its productions, an achievement that Luis Hernández attributes to "his total dedication to this activity to guarantee a high quality product". "This is achieved through meticulous attention to the state of ripeness of the olive tree, the type of fertilizer used and the pruning technique, among other aspects," he added.

Located in the municipality of Tuineje (Fuerteventura), the company has a plantation of more than 2,500 olive trees distributed over more than 85,000 square meters. In 2023, it produced 70 tons of olives and 10,000 liters of oil. Among the varieties cultivated are the Arbequina, Picual and Hojiblanca. The harvest is carried out in the traditional way, followed by a process of cleaning and making the oil.

The products recognized within the framework of the contest will be able to use the official label awarded for one year in their commercialization, and will participate in different promotional actions of the ICCA. In addition, the winning oils will be exhibited at the facilities of this autonomous organization until the next edition of the competition. The production considered to be the Best EVOO in the Canary Islands will be the subject of a report that will be published on its website and sent to the media in the Canary Islands for dissemination.
