Fuerteventura will have a new Emergency and Rescue helicopter.
Canary Islands incorporates six new multifunctional helicopters that will sleep in the bases of La Palma, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
The Minister of Public Administrations, Security and Emergencies has presented this Thursday, at the heliport of La Guancha, one of the six new multifunctional helicopters that the Government of the Canary Islands has incorporated into the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES). This is the Bell 412 EP model, an aircraft that has a series of characteristics that make it more appropriate to the work carried out in the archipelago.
Among the main novelties of this helicopter model, which will be in the bases located on the islands of La Palma, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, it is worth highlighting its ability to provide a multifunctional service (rescues at sea and land, firefighting and other surveillance and prevention services); the possibility of locating people via mobile phone; and the incorporation of floats and skates to give greater security to rescue operations at sea and in the refueling of the fire basket.
Likewise, it has improvements in the systems of the helibaldes for the extinction of fires -two bambis for each of the six bases, with electronic system of multiple discharge and a mechanism that allows the filling of the device without having to submerge it completely- and also in the communications of the rescuers.
Another advantage is that, as the six helicopters have the same characteristics, the continuity of the service is guaranteed, since people from the crew of any of the aircraft can be incorporated, something that did not happen, for example, during the pandemic, because they have two different helicopter models.
Accompanied by the Director General of Security and Emergencies, Gustavo de Armas; the head of the Civil Protection and Emergency Response Service, Montserrat Román; the executive director and the operations coordinator of the company awarded the service (Pegasus), Jesús de la Fuente and Manuel Ferragut, respectively; and the crew of the GES Aire, and after having observed the helicopter, Julio Pérez, has highlighted that the new equipment is the result of a laborious process -he congratulated the Administration and its officials-, which has resulted in the contract of these six helicopters, for five years for 50 million euros.
He stressed that it is an investment in security and, therefore, peace of mind for the canaries of the 8 islands, which allows incorporating technical innovations and modernizing and improving the equipment. The counselor also referred to the qualification of the people who provide this service, pilots, crane operators and rescuers, and stressed their human characteristics, with a vocation and a singular commitment to this type of work they do. In the same way, he affirmed that in this legislature security has been one of the priorities of the Government.
The head of the Civil Protection and Emergency Response Service has also stressed the importance of the act for the work developed during these years to adapt these helicopters to the circumstances of the archipelago. He spoke of the training of personnel already qualified for complicated rescues on land and sea, and warned that in Spain you can only find a similar service in Cantabria, where they have two aircraft, so it can be said that we are facing a reference model.
The operations coordinator of the company Pegasus has emphasized the excellence of the operation in a complicated terrain, by a demanding staff, which has modern machinery adapted to the characteristics of the islands.
Hugo Asensio Álvarez, one of the pilots who operates from the base of La Guancha, has also intervened, who, after explaining how an operation would be in the case of a missing person in the Anaga Natural Park, has said that he is part of a very oiled team for very demanding operations, which can pass in just hours from a rescue at sea to one in high mountains.
During this legislature (2019-2023) the GES has carried out 796 rescues on land, 856 at sea (many of them in difficult conditions of waves, haze and gusty wind turbulence) and 264 firefighting services. In total, 1,916 interventions in the main missions. Other actions are also carried out, such as the detection and monitoring of marine pollution episodes or preventive flights in mass Events.
By islands, Tenerife takes the cake in terms of numbers of interventions, 375 rescues on land, 294 rescues at sea and 79 fires. It is followed by Gran Canaria, 175 on land, 209 at sea and 81 fires. La Palma recorded 95 on land, 88 at sea and 68 fires. Lanzarote is fourth with 46 on land, 104 at sea and one fire. Fuerteventura, with 26 on land, 95 at sea and zero fires is the fifth. La Gomera ranks sixth with 66 rescues on land, 22 at sea and 11 fires. And El Hierro closes the list with 13 on land, 44 at sea and 24 fires.
