A new establishment is always good news for the Municipality, more if it combines quality and tradition in its decoration and in the flavour of its dishes, says the accidental mayor, Matias Peña.

The accidental mayor, Matías Peña attended this weekend at the opening of the Salinas del Carmen Restaurant, next to the museum of the same name, congratulating the managers of this new initiative that combines avant-garde with tradition, quality and good taste in a spectacular setting .

A young team of professionals, captained in the kitchen by Chef Francisco Vilela, in an environment decorated by the Majorero designer Miguel Ángel Chacón, together with photographs from the 50s, 60s and 70s of different salinas in the archipelago, donated by the conejero photographer , Javier Reyes Acuña, who despite his advanced age, also attended the opening of Salinas del Carmen Restaurant.

During the opening ceremony, several institutional and business representatives met, among others, the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Network of Centers and Museums, José Juan Herrera and the manager of the Asofuer business association, Mario De la Cruz.

The opening of a new establishment in the municipality is a sign of entrepreneurship, job creation and expansion of the culinary offer, leisure and excellence, and adds the first deputy mayor of Antigua, Matías Peña, wish the best future to this new Restaurante Salinas del Carmen, and extend congratulations to all the restorers and restorers of the municipality for a daily and constant work, always in search of the best customer service.

We had lunch there yesterday, as management has been nagging me to go there since it opened.

It is called Volcano, which put me off a little as we have used Volcano in the White Centre on a couple of occasions, and in my humble opinion it is the most overrated establishment in Caleta, however, I digress  it took us a couple of minutes to find it as although it is signposted from the outside one you enter the museum, it isn't. It is actually immediately to your right and behind you, has seating inside for about 20/30 and a terrace which seats circa 70/80 with a very nice view over the salt beds and to the sea, we arrived at 12:15 but it does not open until 12:30 so we were very politely asked if we wanted to wait and have a look around while we waited, which we did. There were only two other customers there while we were there, and the staff outnumbered customers 2/1. There is a  decent mix on the menu which I assume changes frequently as they are on clipboards and not set in fancy holders, there is also a selection of Fish of the day which the waiters/ waitresses have on a different clipboard, they served us with a sample of crisp bread with truffle butter, which actually tasted of truffle while we waited for our starter we had a starter to share which was is fried potatoes and chorizo topped with poached eggs, { The Canarians have a name for it as we have had it in two other places, but I cannot recall what it is } but it was very good, followed one of the selections of the fish of the day menu again  it did not have a name but was the only fish choice that was not served with rice, but Canarian potatoes, both the fish and the acompaninebts were excellent, the lady who served us spoke excellent English but you could detect an accent and when I enquired it turned out she has German parents but was brought up on The Island, very polite and very jovial, a bit off putting with her German heritage Smile Smile
A starter to share the fish for two and two bottles of water plus a tip 60€  excellent value I think probably not the cheapest but not the most expensive either, would we go back? Without a shadow of a doubt, and probably within the next week, and believe me I am a hard man to please when it comes to restaurants.
To me drinking responsibly means do not spill it.

I didn't think it was called Volcano but I believed the chef was from there. We went there with JT and Elaine on 5th March, just after it opened. Elaine tried to book but didn't manage to so we had to sit inside.  I think the prices are similar to Volcano (i.e. pricey but worth it) except the desserts are cheaper. As per Volcano, a bottle of wine starts at €18. We had 3 starters between us, two fish dishes, one ribs and I had steak. I believe we all had desserts (my baked cheesecake was delicious) and a couple of bottles of wine and water. The bill was £175ish. We went to Volcano last year for a celebratory meal and it came to €105 for 3 course with wine Yes, the starters and desserts are expensive but I don't think the mains are.

The Las Salinas restaurant and Volcano must have the same owners, as the former is advertised on the Volcano Facebook page.

I did wonder if that was the case, especially given the prices are similar.
