The Radiation Oncology Unit of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura, a center attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has carried out more than 2,700 sessions since the launch of the linear accelerator and the creation of the unit in June 2022. In total, the professionals have treated 204 patients diagnosed with cancer in their almost first year of operation.
The acquisition, installation and maintenance of the radiation oncology equipment of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura, was awarded for an amount of 4,302,150 euros. The creation of a Radiation Oncology service on the island of Fuerteventura was a historical claim of patients in the health area.
The different specialists of the hospital have participated in team committees for decision-making on assessment, treatment and monitoring of patients, who with this new unit avoid the transfer to the reference center in Gran Canaria to receive treatment.
The director of the Health Area of Fuerteventura, Sandra Celis, and the manager of Health Services, José Luis Rodríguez Cubas, highlight the high degree of patient satisfaction with the new service, as reflected in the quality surveys carried out this year.
They also highlight the important progress made by the implementation of this unit, a historical demand of the island, for the care of cancer patients, who avoid having to travel to the reference hospital in Gran Canaria, with the consequent proximity and comfort in the provision of treatment.
