The president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Lola García, communicates that the Satocan group has expressed its decision to withdraw the three applications admitted for processing to investigate rare earths in different parts of the island geography. A decision that has been communicated to him by the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, during his visit to the Island today.
Lola García points out that “as it could not be otherwise, the company has understood the unanimous rejection of Fuerteventura towards rare earths and the feelings of the Majorera population, the island institutions, as well as the FECAM and the FECAI and the different groups with representation in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, who have joined this opposition.”
The island president adds that “from the beginning, all the groups of the Fuerteventura Council have shown their rejection and we have worked on the allegations to stop rare earths in Fuerteventura. For this reason, we hope that Satocan complies as soon as possible with the intentions to withdraw the applications, since the development of this mining activity would represent one of the greatest attacks on the environment and the well-being of the people of the Island."
At the same time, “from the Cabildo we will continue to insist that the State Mining Law be modified, an obsolete law that dates back to 1973 and that does not take into account the singularities of Fuerteventura. Legislation that must be updated to shield our territory from any intention to bring invasive and aggressive mining activities to the Island, so that natural values prevail at all times over resource extraction."
