The possible effects on the Canary Islands archipelago of the Atlantic storm Dorothea have led the regional government to declare three successive alerts throughout this Saturday: first for winds, with maximum alert for hurricane gusts, then for coastal phenomena and finally for forest fires.
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) keeps the western islands on orange warning for strong winds and maritime storm and the rest on yellow warning.
"The Dorothea storm, of great impact, will produce a wind storm in the Canary Islands", and very intense gusts this weekend, a situation that will begin to subside on Monday, the Aemet has warned.
At the moment no incidents have been recorded, the 112 Emergency Coordination Center has reported.
The councils of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro have activated their respective island emergency plans and organized outdoor activities have been suspended, while recreational areas have been closed and it is advised not to travel except for those that are essential.
The Government of the Canary Islands has suspended several selective public employment tests that were to be held this Sunday as a precaution.
According to the data recorded by the Aemet until 5:00 p.m., the strongest gusts of wind in the archipelago have been recorded in El Hierro, where 77 kilometers per hour have been measured, although the most intense gusts are expected from Sunday at dawn.
The forecast is that strong winds can lead to hurricane gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour, which has led the General Directorate of Emergencies to declare maximum alert on the islands of El Hierro, La Gomera and north and west of Tenerife.
The rest of the island of Tenerife and the island of La Palma are on alert for winds, while the eastern islands (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura) are on pre-alert at the moment.
The Weather forecast indicates that strong wind is expected from the south and southeast, with an average speed of 40 to 70 kilometers per hour in the western islands, especially on the north and west slopes, the midlands, high areas and summits. Very strong and locally hurricane-like gusts are likely to reach or exceed 80 to 120 kilometers per hour.
Shortly after these wind alerts, the Government of the Canary Islands decided to declare another alert, this one for coastal phenomena in the territorial area of the entire archipelago, which will be effective from 03.00 hours this Sunday.
Winds of up to force 8 are expected in some areas (from 62 to 74 kilometers per hour) and waves of up to four meters, as well as spring Tides.
The third alert is that of forest fires, which will come into force at 07.00 on Sunday and affect the island of Gran Canaria, while the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro remain in a pre-alert situation.
This alert is due to the fact that an episode of dry air is expected, with haze and wind from the southeast, since the Dorothea storm, located to the west of the archipelago, brings dry continental African air accompanied by haze so that the relative humidity will be less than 30% from about 400 to 600 meters of altitude, which is added to the strong wind with very strong gusts and even hurricanes to leeward.
