The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through the Harbour Master of Las Palmas, under the General Directorate of the Merchant Navy, inspected a total of 1,160 ships last year, most of them national vessels in service (1,110), but also foreign vessels, within the framework of the Paris Memorandum (50), to check that the vessels arriving on our coasts comply with international environmental and safety standards and that crew members have adequate living and working conditions.
In this Captaincy, which includes the maritime districts of Arrecife-Lanzarote and Puerto del Rosario-Fuerteventura, 149 sanctioning proceedings were processed. Most of them affected jet skis, pollution episodes and maritime safety. A total of 1,036 emergencies were handled in this Harbour Master's Office, in collaboration with the Maritime Rescue services, 880 of them related to the rescue of precarious vessels. A total of 50 pollution emergencies and 41 maritime safety emergencies were also dealt with.
Likewise, the Harbour Master's Offices carry out the registration and dispatch of ships, the issuance of professional and recreational titles and certificates and the issuance of all types of reports and authorisations relating to maritime activity. In this regard, it should be noted that files associated with qualifications were managed, including 663 merchant marine qualifications, 2,728 certificates of proficiency and 518 maritime notebooks for crew members. A total of 2,242 shipments of ships and national vessels and 12,465 enrolments and disenrolments of crew members were also processed. The Harbour Master also issued 900 authorizations to facilitate supply to vessels outside the port boundaries (known as Off Per Limit).
With regard to the Ship Registry, 353 registrations of recreational boats and 278 jet skis were issued. The number of ship calls reached 13,777 in the ports of competition of general interest (Puerto de La Luz, Arinaga and Salinetas in Las Palmas, Puerto de Arrecife in Lanzarote and Puerto Rosario in Fuerteventura).
These data are derived from the balance of the year 2023 presented by the Harbour Master of Las Palmas, where work is being done to guarantee the saving of human lives at sea, maritime safety, the prevention and fight against pollution and the control of maritime traffic in its maritime area, among other competencies.
