The Free Union of Air Workers denounces the precariousness and unhealthiness of the conditions of the personnel of the rescue helicopters.
The Free Trade Union of Air Workers (S.L.T.A.) publicly denounces the hygienic conditions of the facilities designed for the cleaning and rest of the flight personnel of the rescue helicopters of the Government of the Canary Islands. According to the association, "the precariousness and unhealthiness of the current situation of these professionals is due to the lack of action of the contractor company Pegasus Aviation/Offshore".
The union reports that "the flight staff of the Emergency and Rescue Group in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, does not have changing rooms with showers and bathrooms where they can change and clean properly". Instead, they transfer, "they are obliged to do it – before and after the operations – on the maneuvering platform of the majorero airport, outdoors and to the luck of the Weather".
S.L.T.A. states that "in addition to having little or no privacy, the work clothes of these rescuers are often stained with fluids or blood of the people they assist in these emergency tasks. Not being able to clean themselves properly in a locker room with toilets and showers endangers their physical health, let alone psychic health."
Pegasus, a contractor of the GES
Transfers, "already with a deadline of May 30, 2020, the company Pegasus Aviation/Offshore was obliged to correct several of these deficiencies at the request of the Labour Inspectorate. However, Pegasus not only repeatedly ignores the Labor Inspectorate not complying with its requirements but also fails to comply with the Government of the Canary Islands in the requirements of the technical specifications of this contract in point 5.1 that says very clearly the following: "Bases of Operations: Dependencies with the necessary conditions for the rest of the crew. Adequate toilets and changing rooms, with seats and lockers to allow the preparation of the crew'.
From the S.L.T.A., "it seems to us a paradox of life that these people who take care of others are their own company who does not take care of them by offering them dignified and decent conditions so that they continue doing what they do best, helping others when they give everything for lost".
