The First World Cup of Capoeira Mestre Paulo Dos Anjos of Fuerteventura has the collaboration of the Department of Commerce and Sports of the Municipality of Tuineje, directed by Delia Figueroa and Juan Manuel Roger, respectively.

This event, which will enable the revitalization of the Gran Tarajal Open Commercial Zone, is an initiative of Mestre Lazinho, Mestra Tate, Tania Andurinha and the Cultural Association of Capoeira Raça Negra; It also has the collaboration of the municipalities of Tuineje, Antigua and Pájara and the Cabildo de Fuerteventura.

Mestre Paulo dos Anjos was known as one of the most skilled and versatile angoleiros of the century. He strongly resisted the attempts to incorporate the changes and fads of modern capoeira into the traditional art. “For me, nothing has changed. I continue practising Capoeira Angola according to tradition,” he used to say.

Born on August 15th, 1936 in the state of Sergipe, the 14-year-old José Paulo dos Anjos made a name for himself in Salvador as a promising boxer. When he met Mestre Canjiquinha one year earlier, he became hooked on Capoeira and began to frequent the roads of the Bahian cities. In the street festivals, his technique and abilities began to attract everyone’s attention. From then on, time would transform him into a master, graduated by Mestre Canjiquinha himself.

He was widely respected in the capoeira world and also well-known as a singer. He recorded some songs on a CD, with his unique style, maintaining the musical tradition of capoeira. Alongside Mestre Gato Preto, he gave classes on Itaparica Island as well as other places in the metropolitan region of Salvador.

In the 1970s, he moved to São Paulo for five years. In São José dos Campos, he formed the group Anjos de Angola (Angels of Angola). In 1978 he won the capoeira championship at the Pacaembu Gymnasium in the state capital. He returned to Salvador in 1980 and influenced the movement of capoeiristas fighting for better working conditions. Beginning in 1987, he led the Brazilian Capoeira Angola Association and combined his capoeira work with his activities as a civil servant in Salvador’s town hall.

In addition, he counted on the master classes of about twenty teachers and teachers of this Brazilian art that combines fighting techniques and music in equal parts. Mestres and professors arrived from places as diverse as Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Portugal, Brazil and Spain. "Capoeira is much more than personal defence", explained Mestre Lazinho, "capoeira is dance, music, percussion, samba ... it is an art that children can practice, but also anyone, regardless of age, and does not understand borders" .

This I Capoeira World Cup also served as an intercultural and interdisciplinary meeting since the Tran Tran Square served as the setting for the exhibition of other sports disciplines such as Canarian Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Zumba or Yoga. "In meetings like this it is clear the possibilities offered by sport as a link between different cultures," said the Councillor for Sports of the Municipality of Tuineje, Juan Manuel Roger.

Among the qualities of capoeira stand out the development of memory, receptivity, reflexes and, as Mestre Lazinho said, "the coexistence with the rest of the group, enhancing the enjoyment of this sport with respect, as it provides emotional balance" . From the physiological point of view, "it not only helps to correct the posture and improve the stretching of the muscles, but it helps us to control the breathing".

During the celebration of the I World Cup of Capoeira Mestre Paulo dos Anjos, also took place the delivery of the belts to children who practice this sport in the municipality of Tuineje. And, as expressed by the Mayor, Sergio Lloret, "it is a discipline that more and more people in our municipality practice. This translates into a symptom of excellent social health because it indicates the good reception that the neighbours of Tuineje have for the presence of other cultures that are incorporated into our day to day life, enriching our knowledge and, in this specific case, contributing new healthy experiences related to sports ".
