15 million euros "to improve waste treatment in Fuerteventura".

Contracts are awarded to modernize the management of Zurita, selective collection with more than 1,000 new containers and transport from clean points.

In a press release from Coalición Canaria that came to our newsroom, the nationalists affirm that "Fuerteventura is moving towards a more sustainable model in waste management thanks to the work of the councilors of Coalición Canaria in the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. In this way, it has been awarded a package of contracts that, among all are around an investment of about 15 million euros and will improve the treatment of waste at the island level. "

The councilors Lola García and Pedro Martínez define these projects "as fundamental to meet the objectives set by the Territorial Waste Plan, making Fuerteventura a benchmark as a model of sustainable and circular consumption".

"Thanks to the work of the Contracting Department and the Waste area, today the award of the new Zurita Management has been completed, for more than 5 million euros, which is added to the award of the new service of collection and transport of waste of light packaging and paper-cardboard in the six municipalities of the Island. This will allow the installation of more than 1,000 side-loading containers that were acquired by the Cabildo from the management of Pedro Martínez in the Waste area. The objective is to offer the island a faster, more efficient collection and increasing the frequency, "they explain.

According to Lola García, "these two projects went out to tender for more than 11 million euros, an investment that is essential to modernize waste management in Fuerteventura. All this work has been possible thanks to the coordinated management between the Contracting department and the Waste area".

Management is a great believer almost compulsive about recycling as are most people and we try, but when you tool up to the bins and there is plastic and glass all-around the bins because they have not been emptied it becomes a chore.

More than 2 million euros are invested to seal the discharge cell number 2 of the Zurita Environmental Complex

The president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret, and the vice president Juan Nicolás Cabrera have moved today, March 15, to the Environmental Complex of Zurita to visit the discharge cell number 2, which will be sealed soon after exhausting its useful life. The contract to undertake the works has already been awarded to the company CORORASA S.L. for more than two million euros.

President Sergio Lloret highlighted the importance of this work "to modernize the Zurita Environmental Complex and continue advancing in the commitments of sustainability and revaluation of waste, always in favor of a more effective and sustainable management of them".

"Today it is a reality what was promised from the Insular Institution, which is to adapt this Environmental Complex to the sustainability and adequate management that the Administration must make of waste on the island," said Juan Nicolás Cabrera.

The winning company will carry out the degassing, sealing and closure of cell number two of the complex, in order to minimize the effects on the environment and integrate it into the environment in which it is located.

The cell was built in 2001, and once its useful life is exhausted, it is definitively sealed and closed. The project is part of the Special Territorial Waste Plan of Fuerteventura and includes the revegetation of the environment to minimize the landscape impact. The total area to be sealed covers 73,338.04 m2.

In addition, "the closure of cell 2, with the work of waterproofing, degassing and sealing with topsoil, will guarantee maximum environmental integration," said Lloret.

This is one more action within those planned by the Island Administration "to modernize the facilities of the Zurita Environmental Complex and improve waste management".

"From the Cabildo of Fuerteventura we have found many important problems to solve on the island, including those related to the Zurita Environmental Complex. Fortunately, the works are already underway and at a good pace, as part of the Insular Institution's commitment to sustainability, which necessarily involves proper management of the waste generated," said Lloret.

4 million euros to build cell 4 of the Zurita Complex.

The Cabildo de Fuerteventura, through the Ministry of Waste, has put out to tender, for more than four million euros, the construction of cell number four of Zurita. It is a priority work for the proper functioning of the Environmental Complex and the treatment of waste on the Island.

The Minister of Waste, Enrique Pérez, explains that this is one of the fundamental actions in the management of waste in Fuerteventura, it is financed with funds from the Cabildo and "it is expected that it can begin to be built at the end of this year". Pérez also points out that "cell number 3 is reaching the end of its useful life and it is necessary to have this new facility, which will have a capacity of one million cubic meters."

Enrique Pérez adds that "at the same time we are working to have an inert cell, waiting for the expropriation of the land. In addition, it is expected to tender next year a leachate plant, a specific facility to treat the liquids generated by the degradation of waste, and other improvements in the service building and dependencies of Zurita. "In short, improve its facilities and adapt them to the needs of Fuerteventura.

€3.2 million for cell number 4 of the Zurita Environmental Complex.

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Ministry of Waste, has awarded the construction of cell number four of the Zurita Environmental Complex, one of the priority works for the proper functioning of the facilities and the treatment of waste on the island. The work has been awarded to UTE Cororasa-Tecopsa for 3.2 million euros, with an execution period of twelve months.

According to the president of the Cabildo, Lola García, "we have met the objective of having the work awarded at the beginning of 2024, which means that, if everything goes according to plan, in the first months of next year the cell will be able to come into operation". "This is fundamental, as cell number 3 is reaching the end of its useful life and it is necessary to start up this new facility of more than one million cubic meters in volume."

The Minister of Waste, Enrique Pérez, highlighted the value of the action, "which is part of the investment of around 15 million euros made by the Cabildo, with its own funds, to renovate Zurita and the transfer plants, and put out to tender the inert cell and leachate plant. Also important are the urbanization works of the facilities of the Zurita Environmental Complex, to adapt them to the needs of Fuerteventura".

For the Minister of Infrastructure, Blas Acosta, "it is necessary to promote all the works that allow the adaptation of the Zurita Environmental Complex, with an improvement that will have a positive impact on waste treatment and the sustainability of the entire island territory".

According to Lola García, "the contract we are signing today is a big step towards making Fuerteventura a more sustainable island". "One of our priorities as an island government is to improve waste treatment. With this new management of the Zurita Environmental Complex we double its staff, which will allow us to recycle a higher percentage of waste and move towards the objectives of the Territorial Waste Plan of Fuerteventura".

The Minister of Waste, Enrique Pérez, explained that "this contract for 8 million euros doubles the personal resources, but also material resources in the Zurita Environmental Complex". "This, added to the new machinery recently acquired, for more than 2.2 million euros, will help manage the waste that enters Zurita." Enrique Pérez expressed his confidence in FFC Medioambiente SAU, "a leading company at a national and international level in waste management".

Likewise, the company FCC Medio Ambiente SAU is responsible for the collection and transport of light packaging and paper-cardboard waste in the six municipalities of Fuerteventura. An investment of 3.1 million euros that has made it possible to improve selective collection with 1,300 side-loading containers, with faster, more efficient and sustainable collection, as well as greater capacity. "This has made it possible to increase the recycling of paper-cardboard and light packaging in Fuerteventura by 11% in just half a year," added Pérez.

Laura Hernández, from FCC Medio Ambiente SAU, thanked the trust placed in the company, "being committed to the objectives set in waste management on the island".
