I'm taking a friend to the hospital on Monday for several appointments. The first one is for a Blood extraction. Does anyone know what part of the hospital this is done in? I've only ever had them done at a Centro Salud before and can't remember seeing 'bloods' at the hospital.
We'll be in a bit of a rush to get to the 2nd appointment so I don't want to waste time hunting around if possible.
The health waiting list in Fuerteventura drops by 28%.

This morning, we received on Radio Sintonía the director of the Fuerteventura Health Area, Tomás Pérez, who has transferred the progress of the center in terms of waiting lists, which have fallen by 28%. In addition, he has assured that the average waiting time of patients has gone from 80 days to 56.

However, the director of the Fuerteventura Health Area has declared that "the situation continues to be critical" regarding the lack of staff in some services of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura, despite having incorporated more than 20 specialists in the last 6 months and having new additions pending.

On the other hand, Tomás Pérez has echoed the lack of blood reserves of practically all groups and has launched an appeal to the entire population to donate blood whenever possible.

Tamara - In my experience, perhaps just by bad luck because of the specialities needed, the waiting times have increased! The waiting time for an ordinary doctor's appointment at Corralejo Centro Salud is dire as well - currently running at 18-20 days for my doctor!

Fuerteventura has 9 new ultrasound machines.

The Ministry of Health allocates more than seven million euros of European funds to the acquisition of ultrasound machines

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands invested a total of 7,346,846 euros of European funds in 2023 to the renovation of ultrasound machines in the islands' public hospitals.

This item made it possible to acquire 131 new units of this health machinery to improve the resources of the Obstetrics and Gynecology, Intensive Care Medicine, Radiodiagnosis, Cardiology and other medical-surgical specialties of the SCS hospitals.

This new equipment, by increasing the diagnostic capacity of the healthcare service, has facilitated the early detection of various pathologies with the consequent application of faster and more effective treatments.

With regard to their distribution among the public hospitals of the SCS, 31 ultrasound machines were assigned to the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital Hospital and 28 to the Canary Islands University Hospital Complex, 28, both in Tenerife.

As for Gran Canaria, a total of twenty new devices were installed at the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín and another nineteen at the Insular-Materno Infantil University Hospital Complex.

Thirteen were referred to the Health Services Management of the Health Area of La Palma; Fuerteventura and Lanzarote nine each; and those of La Gomera and El Hierro, one per Management.

Ultrasound Scanners in Primary Care

In addition, the Ministry of Health has acquired 180 ultrasound machines for distribution in health centres on all the islands. A total of 5,442,660 euros have been allocated to this measure, contemplated in the Comprehensive Strategy for Primary and Community Care, +AP, financed with Next Generation funds.

With the incorporation of this equipment, family medicine and paediatric professionals can use ultrasound as another tool for exploration in their clinical practice and, in this way, guide their diagnoses more appropriately, which has a positive impact on the quality of care provided to the population.

European Funds

This investment has been carried out within the framework of the Assistance for the Recovery and Cohesion of the Territories of the European Union (REACT-EU), launched as part of the European Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic to support the incorporation of additional personnel into the public health systems of the member countries.

Masks become mandatory in all health centres in the Canary Islands.

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands announces the mandatory use of the mask in all health centers of the Archipelago, despite the fact that the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System agreed today to extend until Wednesday the making of a general decision in all regions.

With this measure, the Canary Islands join other autonomous communities in which the mandatory use of masks in health centres has already been decreed. Until now, the use of masks was a recommendation for use in all Canary Islands Health Service centres since mid-December and now it is mandatory.

The regulation, which is transitory for the duration of the epidemic peak of flu and Coronavirus infections, will affect peripheral clinics, health centres and public and private hospitals throughout the Canary Islands.

This measure is taken given the growth of acute respiratory infections throughout Spain and to try to stop the chain of contagion, as well as to protect health professionals and people who go to hospitals and health centres in the archipelago to prevent them from contracting a respiratory infection.

In addition, during this morning's online meeting, the Canary Islands advocated agreeing on a strategy for the prevention of respiratory infections to avoid situations of health tension in the coming flu seasons.

Protective Measures

The Ministry of Health, and as a complement to the mandatory use of the mask in hospitals and health centres, also insists on the importance of maintaining the necessary protection measures in case of presenting symptoms compatible with the flu or COVID-19 to avoid putting the most vulnerable population at risk of contagion.

In this regard, it is recalled that if symptoms such as cough, fever, malaise, sore throat, congestion and runny nose, among others, occur, and to avoid transmission of the virus to other people, the main recommended preventive measures are:

Wear a mask when sharing the space with other people.
Increase the ventilation of the rooms.
Practice frequent hand hygiene, especially after blowing your nose or coughing.
Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough with your arm or a tissue.
Use tissues, throwing them away after each use.
Avoid very close contact with vulnerable people.
Do not share glasses, cutlery, towels and other objects that may have come into contact with saliva or secretions.
Vaccination Recommendation

The Directorate-General for Public Health also recalls the importance of vaccination against flu and COVID-19 as the main tool to prevent serious cases of these infections in the event of contagion and avoids the coexistence of the two infections in the same person, minimizing the severity of the disease in the patient and the stress to the health system.

In addition, it is insisted that the vaccine is the most effective means of avoiding contracting or transmitting the flu, especially in those people who are at risk of suffering complications in case of suffering from the disease and in personnel who are essential to the community such as health workers and caregivers of the elderly or dependents.

Each year, recommendations for influenza vaccination in autumn-winter are established for those population groups at higher risk of complications if infected, and for people who can transmit the disease to others who are at high risk of complications.

The aim of vaccination against the Coronavirus is to strengthen the protection of the most vulnerable people and that of health and social care personnel to reduce morbidity and mortality from the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the impact of this disease on health and social care capacity.

Incidence of influenza in the Canary Islands

According to the surveillance report on acute respiratory infection (ARI) in the Canary Islands prepared by the General Directorate of Public Health of the SCS for the week of December 25 to 31, the incidence rate of ARIs is 1,254.72 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure represents a small decrease compared to the previous week, when a rate of 1,296.78 cases per 100,000 inhabitants was recorded.

The age groups with the highest incidence in the last week are the population aged 0 to 4 years with 4,408 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, people over 79 years of age, with a rate of 1,435 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the population aged 5 to 14, a group with a rate of 1,600 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The presence of "dangerous" mosquitoes in the Canary Islands is beginning to worry.

Health detects two adult 'Aedes' mosquitoes at cruise ship docks in the two Canary Islands capitals.

The General Directorate of Public Health, under the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, and researchers from the University Institute of Tropical Diseases and Public Health of the Canary Islands, attached to the University of La Laguna, have detected two specimens of mosquito of the genus Aedes in the cruise terminals of the ports of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Aedes aegypti) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Aedes albopictus or tiger). Since 2013, the Canary Islands have been monitored for the detection of this type of mosquito through the installation of more than 635 traps at strategic points.

The Entomological Surveillance System of the Canary Islands has been activated for the first time in Gran Canaria when an adult specimen of Aedes aegypti mosquito was detected in one of the traps installed in the Cruise Terminal of the Santa Catalina Pier in the Port of Las Palmas, advances DIARIO DE AVISOS.

This mosquito is a vector widely distributed throughout the world, especially in tropical and subtropical regions, and in Macaronesia it is installed in Madeira (Portugal) or Cape Verde, and is associated with the transmission of viral diseases such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever or chikungunya, in geographical areas where these pathologies are endemic. which doesn't happen in the Canary Islands.
The first time this mosquito was detected in the Canary Islands was in 2017 in a residential area of Puerto del Rosario, in Fuerteventura, and this episode was declared eradicated in 2019.

Subsequently, on March 10, 2022, the Ministry of Health reported the detection of two mosquito larvae, which were confirmed as belonging to this species in a street adjacent to the Port of Santa Cruz de La Palma. After 18 months since the last detection, this vector was eradicated in this area.

Noticias:

Fuerteventura will have nine new ultrasound machines.

The Ministry of Health invests more than 5.4 million euros in 180 ultrasound machines for health centres across the islands

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Assistance Programs of the Canary Islands Health Service, promotes the implementation and development of clinical ultrasound in the Primary Care centers of all the Health Areas of the archipelago with the acquisition of a total of 180 ultrasound scanners, which are currently being distributed to the health centers of all the islands.

This is one of the measures contemplated within the Comprehensive Strategy for Primary and Community Care, +PC. The SCS has allocated an investment of 5,442,660 euros to this acquisition, financed with Next Generation funds.

With the incorporation of this equipment, family medicine and paediatric professionals can use ultrasound as another tool for exploration in their clinical practice and, in this way, guide their diagnoses more appropriately, which has a positive impact on the quality of care provided to the population.

By Health Areas, these 180 ultrasound machines are distributed as follows: 65 for Tenerife, 64 for Gran Canaria, 16 for La Palma, 12 for Lanzarote, 10 for La Gomera, nine for Fuerteventura and four for El Hierro.

The implementation of this equipment is accompanied by a process of theoretical and practical training for the professionals who will use it so that they know its advantages and possibilities.

Benefits of Clinical Ultrasound in Primary Care

Clinical ultrasound is an essential tool in the field of Primary Care. In clinical practice, the use of ultrasound has become part of the physical examination performed on the patient, improving their performance, as it allows the observation and precise measurement of multiple organs that are difficult to assess with other methods.

In addition, it serves to guide the diagnosis of suspicion and guide decision-making in a more effective way. This reduces the number of additional complementary tests, as well as referrals to the field of Specialized Care. In cases where this referral is required, the indications are more precise and of higher quality, thus speeding up the diagnostic and therapeutic process.
The General Hospital of Fuerteventura performs its first carotid surgery.

The General Hospital of Fuerteventura, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, recently performed the first carotid surgery, carried out in collaboration with specialists from the Vascular Surgery Service of the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria, who travelled to the island to perform the intervention.

Carotid endarterectomy consists of an extensive cleaning of the affected blood vessel, removing the plaque that narrows the internal lumen of the artery to minimize the risk of stroke, a very disabling disease that can be fatal and often seriously affects the quality of life of those survivors who suffer a stroke.

This is a very delicate procedure that must be carried out by highly trained healthcare professionals.

Intervention

The internal carotid arteries are responsible, along with the vertebral arteries, for supplying oxygenated arterial blood that perfuses and nourishes the brain and the rest of the central nervous system, which makes up the so-called supra-aortic artery trunks.

When the carotid artery is affected by atherosclerotic disease, the associated thromboembolic phenomena are responsible for the majority of strokes.

In certain well-defined clinical circumstances, such as a transient ischemic stroke or narrowing of a carotid artery that compromises its internal lumen by more than 70 percent, the indication is a surgical intervention on the affected carotid artery, performing what is known as carotid endarterectomy.

Collaboration between hospitals

Since the first by-pass was carried out at the General Hospital of Fuerteventura last July, a total of five highly complex vascular procedures have been performed on the island, which results in the quality of life of those people with complex vascular pathologies, who no longer have to travel to Gran Canaria to receive care.

All this is possible thanks to the close collaboration between both hospital managements, in such a way that specialists from the Vascular Surgery service of the Insular University Hospital of Gran Canaria travel to Fuerteventura to solve a large number of vascular pathologies, which were previously resolved entirely in Gran Canaria. In addition, collaboration continues to be strengthened with specialists in Cardiology to perform and support the procedures that will begin to be carried out in the new Hemodynamics Room of the Majorero hospital.

The director of the Fuerteventura Health Area, Tomás Marcial Pérez, states that "the fact that this type of intervention can be carried out at the General Hospital of Fuerteventura by the vascular surgeons of Gran Canaria is a huge advance for all the inhabitants of Fuerteventura who thus avoid trips to Gran Canaria, which results in their quality of life and recovery after the intervention".

Flu and COVID-19 vaccination campaign begins on 16 October.

The Minister of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esther Monzón, presented this morning the vaccination campaign against influenza and COVID-19 for the 2023-24 season, which will begin in all health centers of the archipelago next Monday, October 16, and which incorporates substantial novelties with respect to previous campaigns.

Together with the counselor, the general director of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), José Díaz-Flores, and the head of the Epidemiology service, Amós García, have detailed the planned operation, the different types of vaccines that will be available to face this season and the advertising campaign that will remember who should be vaccinated.

The Canary Islands have acquired a total of 2023,24 doses of vaccine to face this 335-000 flu season, with a total investment of 2,989,000 euros.

Esther Monzón pointed out that "this year we continue in the situation of coexistence of COVID-19 with other seasonal pathologies such as influenza, so it continues to be essential to vaccinate the most vulnerable groups and essential professionals for the community".

In addition, he recalled that "by vaccinating the at-risk population against influenza, we also avoid the coexistence of the two infections, influenza and COVID-19, in the same person, minimizing the severity of the disease in the patient and the stress to the health system".

For his part, José Díaz-Flores, explained that the information campaign that will be disseminated in digital media, social networks, shift screens in hospitals and health centers, LED screens in the urban environment and radio stations, to remember which are the population groups that are at risk of suffering complications in case of contracting flu or COVID-19, and that they should be vaccinated.

In this sense, the Director General of Public Health insisted that the vaccine is the most effective means to avoid contracting or transmitting the flu, especially in those people who are at risk of suffering complications in case of suffering from the disease and in personnel who are essential for the community such as health and caregivers of the elderly or dependents.

In addition, the head of the Epidemiology service, Amós García, reported that to face this season there will be four types of vaccines aimed at:

Target population older than 6 months. 100,000 doses have been acquired, which has meant an investment of 390,000 euros.
Target population older than 24 months. 180,000 doses have been purchased with a total amount of 1,386,000 euros.
institutionalized elderly population and bedridden elderly at home; over 60 years old. 30,000 doses have been acquired, which has meant an investment of 750,000 euros.
children between two and five years of age (59 months) without underlying pathologies. It can also be used in patients between five and fourteen years of age, including, with underlying pathology that does not have contraindicated. 25,000 doses have been acquired for which 463,000 euros have been invested.
Seasonal Vaccination Recommendations 2023-2024

Each year, autumn-winter flu vaccination recommendations are established for those population groups at higher risk of complications if infected, and for people who may transmit the disease to others who are at high risk of complications. Since the 2021-2022 season, flu vaccination has coincided with COVID-19 vaccination.

The objective of vaccination against the Coronavirus is to strengthen the protection of the most vulnerable people and that of health and socio-health personnel to reduce morbidity and mortality from the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the impact of this disease on the capacity of health and socio-health care.
Flu / COVID-19 vaccination

Taking into account the current epidemiological situation of COVID-19, vaccination during the autumn-winter season (2023-2024) is recommended for the following population groups:

Due to the increased risk of complications or serious conditions in case of suffering from these infections:

People 60 years of age or older.
Persons aged five years or older, inmates in care centres for persons with disabilities and residences for the elderly, as well as other persons institutionalized on a long-term basis and residents in closed institutions.
People under 60 with chronic illnesses such as:
diabetes mellitus and Cushing's syndrome.
morbid obesity (body mass index ≥40 in adults, ≥35 in adolescents or ≥3 SD in childhood).
chronic cardiovascular, neurological or respiratory diseases, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia, cystic fibrosis and asthma.
chronic kidney disease and nephrotic syndrome.
haemoglobinopathies and anaemias or haemophilia, other coagulation disorders and chronic bleeding disorders, as well as recipients of blood products and multiple transfusions.
Asplenia or severe splenic dysfunction.
chronic liver disease, including chronic alcoholism.
Serious neuromuscular diseases.
immunosuppression.
cancer and malignant blood diseases.
Cerebrospinal fluid fistula and or awaiting cochlear implant.
celiac disease.
chronic inflammatory disease.
disorders and diseases that lead to cognitive dysfunction: Down syndrome, dementia and others.
Pregnant women in any trimester of gestation and women during the puerperium (up to six months after delivery).
Cohabitants with people with a high degree of immunosuppression, with people with other diseases at higher risk and with older people.
To reduce the impact and maintenance of critical and essential services to the community:

Staff of health centres and establishments (including pharmacies) and public and private social and health centres (both health and non-health personnel).

People working in essential public services, with special emphasis on the following subgroups:
National, regional and local security forces and bodies.
Armed forces.
Civil Protection Services.
Flu vaccination

In addition to the above groups, influenza vaccination is also recommended for:

Child population between six and 59 months (5 years) of age.
People aged five to 59 years with an increased risk of complications from the flu, such as those between the ages of five and 18 who are on long-term aspirin therapy, or all smokers.
Students in internships in health centers and establishments (including pharmacies) and social health.
People with direct occupational exposure to animals or their secretions in poultry, pig or mink farms or wildlife (birds, wild boars or mustelids), such as farmers, veterinarians, farm workers, hunters, ornithologists, environmental agents, Zoo personnel, etc. The purpose of vaccination of these groups is to reduce the opportunity for concomitant infection of human and avian or porcine viruses, reducing the possibility of recombination or genetic exchange between both viruses.
