Radio Sintonia:

Concerns are growing about the misuse of chlorethylene for non-medicinal purposes.

The Official College of Pharmacists of Las Palmas warns that in recent weeks there has been an increase in demand for chlorethyl, a local anesthetic used in sports medicine. This increase is different, depending on the area, in the province of Las Palmas, but coincides with a generalized increase at the national level.

Misuse that leads to serious consequences
The significance of this increase in sales nationwide, at the moment moderately in the province of Las Palmas, lies in the use that is being given to this product by a part of society, which inhales it instead of using it on the skin in order to achieve, consciously, Some of the side effects that occur from poisoning.

It is especially dangerous because the effects sought are associated with others
that can lead to death, coma and deterioration of liver function, as well as
arrhythmias, loss of consciousness, memory or seizures.

It should also be noted that it is a gas that is at a temperature of 200 degrees below zero, so misused can cause burns, contact dermatitis, eye or nasal irritation and / or alterations in the state of consciousness.

Inform and prevent misuse
It is, therefore, a product that used correctly does not involve risks, but that used inappropriately and for a purpose different from the indications for which it is prescribed, can cause damage in the medium, short and long term, and is especially dangerous when combined with other substances such as alcohol or other drugs.

From pharmacies we can only inform about the consequences, but not refuse to dispense it, since not
only can it be requested without a prescription, it can also be
purchased online or in parapharmacies.

The College has communicated the situation to all professionals so that, as
health workers, they work on prevention from whatever their modality.
