Quote:The Clean Ocean Project Association, the City Council of La Oliva and the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, from the Biosférate project, encourage the collection of marine garbage on the beaches of the North of the island with the Playapallet project.

This initiative consists of the installation of 19 points on the north coast, between El Cotillo and Corralejo, of containers made with recycled pallets destined for the collection of plastic remains and others that the sea deposits on the beaches.

The situation of the beachpallets is marked on the website of the project www.playapallet.org, where it is clearly indicated with signage in Spanish and English for its use, only for garbage deposited by the sea. Users can also inform through this website about the status of containers to inform local authorities and optimize their management and treatment.

In this way the current waste collection is encouraged by the users of the beaches, aquatic sports practitioners and other visitors from the coast, who will have a place to deposit the bags that they collect during their visit to the site.

The surf schools have applauded the initiative and intend to include within the program of their courses a small time dedicated to clean the coast and thus contribute to the care of the environment where they carry out their activity.

The campaign has been proposed by the Clean Ocean Project Association, which has been working on the island for more than 15 years committed to the care of the coastal and marine environment and the elimination of single-use plastics.

The Biosférate project has supported the initiative to continue spreading among the population the importance of conserving and caring for the natural and cultural values of the Fuerteventura Biosphere Reserve, in this case especially raising awareness about the problem posed by plastics of a single use and promoting responsible consumption by citizens.

I hope the project Playa Pallet will be a success and one day we'll see the pallet boxes around the island.
Looks like a good idea, in principle, but how do they stop all the garbage blowing away in the wind??

We've all seen the plastic-bag bins turn inside out and dump all the litter back along the seafront, in a strong wind.
Maybe they need lids and a more substantial structure. But at least a positive move.
Most of the plastic from the ocean is pretty heavy to get blown away. When I'm picking up the rubbish I don't mind to carry the plastic bags all the way back to the nearest bin but the plastic, timber and glass bits are quite heavy to carry for a couple of hours.
Having a lid isn't a bad idea and if lids will be needed I'm sure more people will suggest it at their website and they eventually add them to the boxes.
Just wanted to add a pic of the plastic bits I've managed to collect at the steps beach a few months ago. Had a car parked pretty close so no problem to take it to the recycling bin. Pretty heavy to walk with it to El Cotillo and the pallet bin would be much appreciated in that case.
Yesterday at Punta Playa, near Cofete.
Great idea Sam, doesn’t look like it has been used much yet though ☹️☹️

I would say they just emptied the box as I could see tiny bits only at the bottom. Glass half full here 😀

Also, I spent a couple of hours walking around and found just a few tiny bits of rubbish that I took with me to Morro Jable.
Yvonne saw a contribution on Facebook where they use the same wire mesh, but in the shape of a big fish with its mouth open and a sign that says feed me!

Do you by any chance recall the location, Perry?
I saw that as well but no idea where it was. Great idea to get the kids interested in wanting to fill it though 😁😁
