The strong overflow beaches a dolphin in the north of Fuerteventura.

The animal ended up among the rocks in an area near Majanicho

The strong swell that accompanies us this Holy Week left stranded to the west of Majanicho, next to the lowering of the "virao ass" a dolphin whose circumstances of death are unknown.

The animal showed no signs of injury, so the work of the necropsy will be essential to know what the problem of its death was.

Without yet knowing the species of the dolphin, everything indicates that it is a young specimen of striped dolphin that could have had problems with the force of the sea when it came very close to the coast, but talk about waiting for the necropsy.
A feral Majorero donkey rescued in Jandía.

The Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura Species Rescue and Recovery Centre, through the Chekipa Foundation, in collaboration with the Crines del Viento Equestrian Centre, the veterinary technical team of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Pájara City Council, as well as the municipal workers, all of them with the knowledge of the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard of Fuerteventura, They carried out a complex rescue of a feral Majorero donkey, an endangered breed, last Monday, March 11.

The rescue was launched after receiving a warning from both Oasis Wildlife and the Pájara City Council, about a wild, adult and injured Majorero donkey, which had been sighted in the vicinity of the Barranco de Jorós and Cofete beach.

The organization explained that the intervention involved a coordinated and meticulous effort of more than two hours. The veterinarian in charge carried out a field inspection, revealing the presence of the injured Majorero donkey, which lived together with three other males and a female. After checking its condition, the animal was immobilized and transferred to Oasis Wildlife, to receive specialized veterinary medical treatment.

Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura, has reported that after a meticulous general examination and a blood test, the specialists have concluded that the rescued specimen is an adult male, which is in a state of malnutrition. In addition, he has multiple visible wounds on his front legs and on both sides of the neck, derived from confrontations with another male during the heat period. These lesions were in an open and unhealed state, with the additional complication of being infected by fly larvae. Therefore, they have considered it crucial to address these wounds appropriately, to prevent more serious complications in the future.

During the medical examination, light sedation was applied to the animal to ensure its tranquility and facilitate the process of veterinary evaluation and treatment. The technical veterinary team of the Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura species rescue and recovery centre has provided immediate care to the animal, cleaning and dressing the wounds with bandages, specially designed for the deepest injuries. In addition, a deworming process has been carried out and a flexible diet has been implemented, suitable for animals that come from the wild.

The Majorero donkey will remain in quarantine at Oasis Wildlife until its health condition is completely stabilized.

In order to prevent future conflicts with other males, castration of the specimen is contemplated. Once it is in optimal conditions, the possibility of releasing it into its natural habitat or wherever the Pájara City Council deems appropriate will be evaluated.

"During the rescue, as on many other occasions, we noticed that some tourists were throwing food from their vehicles to these endangered Majorero donkeys. This action not only endangers road safety by attracting animals to the road, but also alters their natural diet. Please, let's avoid feeding feral wildlife. Observing them is wonderful, but interfering in this way can have serious consequences," said Guacimara Cabrera, manager of Oasis Wildlife.

Cabrera emphasized the importance of citizens reporting this type of situation to provide help to animals, considering it an act of citizen responsibility. He also expressed his deep gratitude for the collaboration of the community, who have turned to the authorities and Oasis Wildlife, as fundamental points of reference in this type of interventions.

The people in charge of Oasis Wildlife have given it the name of Jorós, in honor of the ravine where it was located.
The City Council of La Oliva asks for collaboration to avoid the abandonment of dead animals in public spaces.

In a joint effort to preserve public health and respect for the environment, the City Council of La Oliva, through the Department of Public Health, headed by Councilor Christian Rodríguez, calls for citizen collaboration to avoid the abandonment of dead animals in public spaces, a problem that has been increasing in the municipality of La Oliva.

The mayor of the City of La Oliva, Isaí Blanco, stressed the importance of addressing this issue with responsibility and citizen awareness. This not only affects the well-being of our community, but it is also an action contrary to the regulations and ethics that we must follow as citizens," said the mayor.

For his part, the Councilor for Public Health, Christian Rodríguez, expressed his concern about this situation and stressed the need to change habits. "From the Department of Public Health we strongly request the help of citizens to avoid this type of practice. Dumping dead animals is not only inappropriate, but it's also illegal. A giant lizard from Gran Canaria is discovered on a farm in Lajares.

The Environment and Hunting Area of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, led by Carlos Rodríguez, has been alerted about the presence of a giant Gran Canaria lizard on a private estate in the village of Lajares, located in the municipality of La Oliva. The discovery came when a neighbor was inspecting his family garden due to damage to his plants, he found the reptile trapped in a trap he had set to identify the person responsible for the damage.

The lizard, which measures 44 cm long and weighs 117 grams, is being cared for at the La Oliva Biological Station, in the space managed by RedEXO through the service concession company, GESPLAN. Necessary measures are being taken to ensure their well-being while their situation is assessed and the appropriate course of action for their care and protection is determined.

Once the necessary bureaucratic procedures are managed, this animal will be returned to its natural habitat in Gran Canaria, with RedEXO being in charge of coordinating this important task.

The Minister, Carlos Rodríguez, pointed out that "from the Environment area we continue to work on the preservation of native fauna and flora, collaborating closely with experts and organizations to guarantee the conservation of the species that inhabit our archipelago.

The Gran Canaria giant lizard (Gallotia stehlini) is a species endemic to the island of Gran Canaria. With a primarily vegetarian diet, this reptile plays a crucial role in dispersing the seeds of various plants, making it an essential component of the local ecosystem.

The Canary Islands Early Warning Network for Invasive Alien Species (RedEXOS) aims to locate, identify, control or eradicate new foci or populations of these species in the Canary Islands to prevent their establishment or expansion.

From the Cabildo, a call is made to citizens to immediately inform 112 in case of sighting a species of these characteristics.
The Cabildo restores the skeletons of the Path of the Cetaceans.

The Ministry of the Environment preserves and revitalizes the bones of six marine animals, located in various parts of the island

The Cabildo of Fuerteventura, through the Environment area, has undertaken the restoration of the skeletons that make up the Path of the Cetaceans. The initiative seeks to preserve and revitalize this important maritime natural heritage, which represents an integral part of the island's marine history.

The Minister of the Environment, Carlos Rodríguez, stressed that this initiative "is not only a testimony to the rich marine biodiversity that has surrounded Fuerteventura, but also an opportunity to educate the community about the importance of preserving our marine environment. The restoration of these skeletons is not only an act of conservation, but also a tribute to the magnificence of these sea creatures."

The bones are found at key points in Fuerteventura, close to the coast where these cetaceans originally beached. Dining venues include El Cotillo, next to the Torre del Tostón; Gran Tarajal, at the roundabout, next to the fishermen's guild; Las Salinas del Carmen; Puerto Rosario, on the right side of Playa Chica; in the rest area of Isla de Lobos, and in the Saladar de Jandía, near the lighthouse. It should be noted that this last skeleton will be disassembled due to significant imperfections that require a complete restoration.

The restoration process includes the maintenance and repair of marine animal skeletons, including two Cuvier's beaked whales, a minke whale, a pilot whale, a fin whale and a sperm whale. These skeletal remains, exposed to erosion by wind, sand and salt water, require specialized care to ensure their long-term preservation.

Reclamation work involves repairing fractures in broken bones, modeling missing parts, and applying specialized techniques to protect skeletons from the damaging effects of the marine environment. It is estimated that each skeleton will require approximately two weeks to complete this process.

With this initiative, the Cabildo reaffirms its commitment to the preservation of natural heritage and continues to work to ensure that future generations can enjoy the unique beauty and biological richness that the Path of the Cetaceans represents.
Hammerhead shark sighted in Arrecife marina. (30.01.24)

The shark, which can grow up to 6 meters long, is not dangerous to humans if left undisturbed

It is a shark specimen that was observed during the Canary Islands. The waters of Lanzarote have been calm for days, the haze has been present and there has been no swell. The island is an ideal habitat for this species to approach more coastal areas.

On Tuesday morning, a fisherman observed the presence of a hammerhead shark on the coast near Arrecife, the island's capital. In the video, you can see how its fin protrudes above the surface.

The hammerhead shark is an animal that can measure more than 6 meters in length and weigh up to 600 kg, has a head in its characteristic T shape and powerful teeth. Their diet is carnivorous, but they do not pose a danger to humans as recorded attacks are extremely rare. They feed on smaller fish, squid and crustaceans, and do not actively seek out human prey.

The hammerhead shark is critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, due to a reduction of more than 80% of its population in the last 30 years as a result of illegal fishing and trade in the fins of this species.
The extinction of the Canarian houbara accelerates.

Power and telephone lines, roadkills and feral cats accelerate the extinction of the Canary Islands houbara

Researchers from the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN-CSIC) show in a study that power and telephone lines, road accidents, wire fences and feral cats are accelerating the demographic decline of the Canary Island houbara, Chlamydotis undulata fuertaventurae.

The researchers have been analysing the populations of this bird for 8 years, marking specimens with GPS tracking devices, which has allowed them to know in detail the problems faced by this threatened species, endemic to the Canary Islands and an emblem of the fauna of the archipelago.

"Most of the fatal accidents on power lines and telephone lines occur at night, because houbaras are nocturnal migrants. The authorities must take urgent measures if they want to prevent the species from disappearing in a few decades," explains MNCN researcher Juan Carlos Alonso, who directs the Houbara Project.

"Another important factor is the number of people being run over by vehicles, which circulate in very high numbers on the islands' roads and paths. In the houbara breeding areas, it would be necessary to regulate the traffic of tourists, which has increased exponentially in recent decades, as well as to establish speed limits for vehicles. Finally, predation by feral cats is also contributing to many houbara deaths on the islands," Alonso adds.

According to the research, published in the journal Scientific Reports and promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands, as a whole, mortality due to anthropogenic causes affects 6.2% of the Canary Islands houbaras annually, a value that, added to that of natural mortality, reaches 12.5% of individuals. Given that the average annual productivity of chickens is only 7.15%, the current mortality rate is demographically unsustainable.

By eliminating human-caused mortality, the population could recover, although the species would still require management actions to improve habitat quality and promote reproduction. "It is essential to adopt urgent conservation measures such as burying the most dangerous power lines, signalling the remaining ones with effective devices at night, and regulating traffic, including speed limits, to reduce anthropogenic mortality.

Likewise, it is necessary to improve the quality of the habitat and reduce the human impact in the areas where the houbaras breed, to try to increase their reproduction rate," Alonso proposes. The situation of the species is very delicate and has been aggravated in recent years due to the lack of rainfall. In Fuerteventura, the species is on the verge of extinction.

Tamara: I'll add my own comment here about the decline of the Houbara in the Tindaya area. There are 3 main culprits that I have seen over the 8 years I have lived in Tindaya.
For the first few years I lived here there were 2 houbara that came to feed on the plants along our lane every teatime. They walked up the field, along the lane for about 50m and then back down again. I was privileged to witness the courtship ritual several times although I never saw any young.
Then the problems started:
1. The Cabildo decided to clear the plants (weeds?) along the side of the lane. Why? Who knows? They didn't just cut back a few plants, they brought in a bulldozer and scraped 2m of ground alongside the length of the lane. All plants removed including some beautiful and rare stuff. (orange flowered Spanish bluebells and Dune Crocus were just 2) I saw them starting and rushed out to try to stop them but they were just like 'we have orders to clear the vegetation!' An email to the Cabildo to complain after the event got no response.
2. 2 different German families moved in near me. They both believe that all animals and children should be 'free'. They have numerous cats and large dogs that do as they please. A couple of months ago one families' dogs went to a local finca and killed a young goat - a denuncia later and they have got their dogs inside a fenced garden now. The cats all still roam free. The 2nd family have recently got a young podenco cross that is allowed to roam, it's friendly enough but a right nuisance. I often see it down in the wild fields.
3. General dog walkers. Loads of people arrive with their dogs in cars and let them out to run free for an hour or two across the countryside while they wander off track.

A large Couvier's beaked whale stranded in Pozo Negro (published 23/12 at 22.19pm)

The cetacean, almost six meters long, has been located in an area of cliffs, according to environmental agents

A Cuvier's beaked whale, between 5 and 6 meters long and weighing about five tons, has been stranded since last Friday in an area of cliffs on the beach of Pozo Negro, in Fuerteventura, which is making it difficult to remove.

Sources from the Cabildo of Fuerteventura have reported the difficulties they are encountering in removing the beaked whale from the site, since the current itself has been dragging the body to the cliffs, which complicates its removal, advances the EFE agency.

Environmental agents of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura hope that the change of tide will move the body of the animal to the beach area to be able to carry out the removal work, work that they still do not know if they can be carried out throughout this Saturday.

The Environment agents themselves will participate in them, as well as Maritime Rescue and the company that is responsible for removing this type of animal when it appears stranded.

Once the body is refloated, it will be transferred to the Zurita environmental complex, in Puerto del Rosario, where a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Spain's new animal welfare law came into effect in September 2023¹. The law applies to domestic and captive wild animals, but excludes dogs used for hunting or other professional activities such as search and rescue dogs and those operating with law enforcement. It also excludes animals used in bullfighting or production¹. Here are some of the key points of the law:

- Dog owners will have to make sure their pets have third party liability insurance.
- Cats will have to be sterilized before six months unless registered for breeding.
- There will be a ban on keeping pets permanently on balconies and terraces.
- Pets must be identified with a microchip.
- Regularly keeping dogs and cats in outside spaces, storage rooms, basements or vehicles is prohibited.
- The commercial breeding of pets, whose individual identification will be compulsory under new regulations, will not be permitted unless the person responsible is registered on an official list of pet breeders.
- Circuses will no longer be allowed to keep/exhibit elephants, tigers or lions, although dolphin shows at water parks are not affected.

The law aims to guarantee animal welfare and protection, and to establish a common legal framework throughout Spain in particular to reduce the number of abandoned animals¹. People responsible for domestic animals who do not comply with identification obligations, use violent methods in their pet training, administer substances that may harm the animal (unless directed to do so by a vet) and mutilate or carry out unauthorised bodily modifications (ear clipping or tail docking) to the animal will be subject to the weight of the law. Fines for violations will range from €500 to €200,000, depending on the severity of the offence¹.

I hope this helps!
Fraser's dolphins spotted for the first time in waters off Fuerteventura.

They were located by a cetacean watching encounter guided by the SECAC

Last Saturday, the hundred people participating in the whale watching activity, organized by the Biosphere Reserve and guided by the Society for the Study of Cetaceans in the Canary Islands (SECAC), had the privilege of observing several specimens of Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei).

This species is characterized by its very triangular and pointed fins in addition to its characteristic coloration pattern of a darker gray on its face and around its eyes, and its shorter but visible snout.

During the sighting, the group maintained its course and trajectory, which made it difficult to identify, until they decided to approach the bow of the boat and the species could be confirmed and cited for the first time in the waters of the southeast coast of Lanzarote.

On the way back to port, the attendees were also able to observe a large group, with several adult individuals and hatchlings of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), a species very recognizable for its unsociable behavior and for having a rather dark band that originates in the snout, mostly black, and that extends dorsally, surrounding the eye. to the anal area.

Finally, the sighting was completed with two specimens of pilot whales (Grampus griseus), with their unmistakable globose head, their very large dorsal fin and their half-grayish, half-whitish coloration, due to the usual interactions with other individuals or prey, in which marks are generated on their gray skin.

These last two species are common in the eastern waters of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, according to the SECAC environmental biologist responsible for the interpretation of the activity, Francesca Fusar. The area is considered a Site of Community Importance (SCI), a protected area included in the European Union's Natura 2000 Network for its rich marine biodiversity and which represents a hot spot for cetaceans worldwide.

The excursion, which was attended by the councillor of the Biosphere Reserve of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Samuel Martín, aimed to raise awareness of the characteristics, peculiarities and importance of the marine mammals that inhabit our coasts and to raise awareness among the population about the importance of protecting and keeping the seas and oceans clean. During the journey, a cursory collection of rubbish floating on the surface was carried out.
The Civil Guard investigates a case of animal abuse to find the bodies of three dogs in Fuerteventura.

The Civil Guard of Fuerteventura has reported on the investigation, on September 5, to a 23-year-old person for the alleged authorship of a crime of animal abuse by possessing inside a kennel the corpses of three dogs "tied and mummified" in the town of Tuineje.

SEPRONA became aware of the facts after receiving an anonymous call, which reported the possible mistreatment of several dogs in the town of Tuineje; although, he did not specify what they consisted of.

Immediately, the SEPRONA Patrol of Puerto del Rosario moved to the indicated place, being able to verify how inside a facility destined to kennel there were three mummified corpses of dogs and tied by chains. For this reason, the appropriate investigation was initiated to determine the causes of death and
possible criminal responsibilities that could arise.

The protocol of action established in these cases was activated, consisting of the collection of evidence (corpses), requiring the help of the veterinary services of the Central-South Commonwealth of Fuerteventura, which immediately moved to the place of discovery, for the transfer and corresponding study that will determine the possible causes of death, all being available to the
Judicial Authority.

On the other hand, as a result of the investigation carried out by the Civil Guard and the different evidence provided to the instruction of the proceedings, the owner of the bodies found was identified, and according to the first evidences they would have died of severe dehydration due to lack of water, chained and omission of the due care of their owner, a circumstance that was aggravated by the high temperatures reached in the months of July and August.

For all these reasons, the owner of the dogs was charged with a crime of animal abuse for omission of due care by sending the Police report to the corresponding guard court and the Environmental Prosecutor's Office in Puerto del Rosario.

This criminal typology is in Article 340.Bis of the Criminal Code, with a prison sentence of twelve to twenty-four months, in addition to the penalty of special disqualification of two to four years for the exercise of the profession, trade or trade that has to do with animals, as well as for possession of animals.
