Tim Elter, the Majorero surfer who will go to the Olympics.

The athlete born and on the island, and raised in Lajares, has lived all his life next to the waves of the north of the island of Fuerteventura
NEWSROOMFUERTEVENTURA

The young Majorero Tim Elder qualified this week, along with 23 other surfers around the world for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he will represent the country of his parents, Germany, but will be a Majorero participant in the Olympic Games in one of the most popular sports on the island.

Elder, a native of Lajares, who learned to surf on the north coast of Fuerteventura, was busy planning a trip to Teahupo'o in Tahiti when an unexpected qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games forced him to modify his travel plans.

Tim, who was born in Fuerteventura in 2003, was 2 times champion of the Canary Islands in junior categories and champion of Spain for regional teams with the Canarian team.

"Actually, I was saying to my friends, 'Hey, maybe we should go to Chopes to surf,' when Didier [Piter, German surfing coach] said to me, 'yes, why don't you look to qualify [for the Games]?'" Elter tells Olympics.com.

"I wasn't even sure it was coming," the 20-year-old Elter said on his debut at the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico. "I wasn't sure until the last training camp and it turns out I made the team and now I'm in the Olympics and it's crazy."

Born to German parents, Elter was born in Fuerteventura and grew up in the village of Lajares and started surfing when he was six years old. His first surfing competition came two years later.

"Surfing is my life," he says. "I can't imagine not living by the sea. It gives me so much adrenaline, so much joy. There are so many moments that I associate with surfing; Good and bad, but times when I grew as a person. I owe a lot to the sea and what I've learned from it."

Noticias:

The 16-year-old Majorero, Ancor Sosa, sweeps the wingfoil

Ancor wins all the heats of Wingfoil Freefly-Slalom and shines in the Surf-Freestyle class, while her sister, Zoe Sosa flies high in Big Air kite surfing

The original rider from Fuerteventura, Ancor Sosa, has left everyone with their mouths open during the first day of competition of the Gran Canaria Air Battle, the largest kitesurfing and wingfoil festival in Spain that hosts this year the Gran Canaria beach of Las Burras from December 6 to 10. With conditions that improved the forecasts, it has been possible to carry out tasks in the modalities of Wingfoil Freefly-Slalom (zigzag races) and Surf-Freestyle (freestyle), led by Ancor Sosa, in addition to holding the first round of Big Air Kitesurfing (high jumps), in which Noah Nicolas from Tarife stood out in the men's category and the Majorera Zoe Sosa (Ancor's sister) in the women's.

During this first day of competition, all eyes have been on the local competitor, Ancor Sosa, who has come out undefeated in the 5 Wingfoil Freefly-Slalom heats. "He is the champion of this class, he is unbeatable, although we will probably do more rounds of this modality," said Javier Ippólito, head judge of the competition. Although every 4 rounds a discard is made, which could change the results, "Ancor could even afford not to participate in a race, but knowing it, it will not let itself be won in any of them," added Ippólito. Following Sosa are Jeremy Rodríguez (Gran Canaria) and Manuel Morillo (Lanzarote).

After finishing first in all the wingfoil races, Ancor Sosa shines again in the Surf-Freestyle class with a frontside 7 (consisting of two 360º rotations) that the judges rated with about 7 points and a well-rated front flip. "It's one of the most complicated manoeuvres, you make a forward rotation and it's totally reversed, it's very difficult to calibrate the board to pass over you and land with speed. Although it is not a double rotation maneuver, when done vertically it scores similarly," explained Javier Ippólito. The second round, however, was won by Alfonso García from Tenerife thanks to a backflip that caught the attention of the jury. There would be two rounds scheduled for this Friday to finish the first round.

Noah Nicolas from Tarife and Zoe Sosa from Fuerteventura are the riders who fly the highest

Subsequently, the kitesurfers went out into the water to compete in Big Air, but in this class the rider who flew the highest was Noah Nicolas, despite the fact that his specialty is the Strapless Freestyle modality. During the 4 rounds of the men's category, it was a jump with skill and style by the Tarife rider accompanied by a double backloop board off (a maneuver that involves making two complete turns in the air while the rider momentarily detaches himself from the board) the best score of the day. It should be remembered that in this discipline both the height (70%) and the technical execution and manoeuvres carried out (30%) are scored.

In addition to the men's category, Daniela Moreno from Gran Canaria and Zoe Sosa (Ancor's sister) also faced each other in the air, who is making her debut in her first competition in style. The two were very tight in the opinion of the judges, while Zoe Sosa attacked forward with front rolls (360º forward turns) and kiteloops (circular turns with the kite), Daniela Moreno backwards with backloops (360º backturns). "It was my first competition, I just started kitesurfing, so I'm very nervous," said Sosa, 21. In his opinion, the wind was "weird" and didn't go the way he wanted, but he hopes to get out again.

The forecasts for this Friday are very positive, so the finals of the Big Air Kitesurfing and Wingfoil Surf-Freestyle modality will be held, in addition to starting with the first heats of Strapless Freestyle Kitesurfing. Depending on the conditions, even if the first rounds have been held, other repechage rounds could be held, which could completely change the results. "If the conditions allow it, we will also try to compete in Olas with wingfoil, probably one of the most anticipated classes," said Manuel Martinez, organizer of the event.

The festival's line-up includes more surprises for this weekend

Simultaneously to the competition, this Friday, Noah Nicolas, world champion of the youth kitesurfing (U19 Strapless), will give a free workshop of this modality to all those who want to improve their level, especially to improve their technique in Strapless Freestyle. In addition to the interventions aimed at development and training, the programme foresees a beach clean-up this Saturday, December 9, and ensures fun with AquaSports Gran Canaria.

Throughout the festival, there will also be a raffle of material from the brands CORE, North Kiteboarding and Duotone, among others. Along with these entities, Ahembo also stands out, with its brand 7up and SPAR Gran Canaria as private sponsors. The Gran Canaria Air Battle Festival, organised by the Canakite Experiences Sports Club with the collaboration of the Royal Canarian Sailing Federation and the City Council of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, as well as the institutional sponsorship of the Sports and Tourism areas of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, will be the last stop of the qualifying series of the Global Wingsports Association (GWA).

The crossing will have a route of 3,500 meters leaving from the Punta del Marrajo and arriving at the ramp of the marina of Corralejo.

The diversity of origins of the participants (Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Holland, USA, Madrid, Malaga, Barcelona, Granada, Basque Country and a wide representation of all the Canary Islands) give a good account of the great expectation that this sporting event produces among swimming lovers, being more than 66% of the participants non-residents on our Island.

As every year, since the beginning of this Crossing, we will have the presence of outstanding swimmers of this sport such as ARANZAZU ARANEGA BENITEZ Canarian swimmer specifically from Tenerife, with multiple championships and records of Spain, Europe, the Canary Islands and this year, third in the world in Open Water, in the World Cup held in Japan. It is always the objective of this Society to combine sport and nature, and to promote inclusion in all areas of society through the practice of physical activity, as demonstrated, for example, by the age of the swimmers registered this year which is between 14 and 85 years.

The departure of the 258 participants will take place around 12:00 hours from Punta de Marrajo, in Isla de Lobos, while the arrival of the first swimmers is expected around 12:45 on the ramp of the Corralejo Marina. Previously, it will be carried out in the Nautical School, the control of the participants, the official photo, and later the boarding of the swimmers will be carried out in the Celia Cruz boat (approximately 11:30 hours). As in previous editions, security measures have been reinforced. The organization has developed a detailed security and emergency plan, which will be attended by Civil Protection, health team, and several support boats and canoes that will delimit and monitor the development of the test throughout its route.
