Trial trip of the catamaran "Taidía Volcano" to Morro Jable

The catamaran "Volcán de Taídía" is on a test trip this morning in the port of Morro Jable (south of Fuerteventura). Grupo Armas Trasmediterránea wants to test the manoeuvrability of this vessel, the most modern in its fleet, with a view to its possible positioning on the aforementioned line in the weekend service, reports the specialized magazine Puente de Mando.

The company maintains a daily ferry service between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Puerto del Rosario, so the supply of goods is fully guaranteed, in addition to the passenger capacity on the ships that cover the line, "Volcán de Tamadaba", "Ciudad de Ibiza" and "Ciudad de Valencia", the latter with two stopovers on the round trip to Cadiz.
The Harbour Master of Las Palmas inspected 1,160 vessels in 2023.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through the Harbour Master of Las Palmas, under the General Directorate of the Merchant Navy, inspected a total of 1,160 ships last year, most of them national vessels in service (1,110), but also foreign vessels, within the framework of the Paris Memorandum (50), to check that the vessels arriving on our coasts comply with international environmental and safety standards and that crew members have adequate living and working conditions.

In this Captaincy, which includes the maritime districts of Arrecife-Lanzarote and Puerto del Rosario-Fuerteventura, 149 sanctioning proceedings were processed. Most of them affected jet skis, pollution episodes and maritime safety. A total of 1,036 emergencies were handled in this Harbour Master's Office, in collaboration with the Maritime Rescue services, 880 of them related to the rescue of precarious vessels. A total of 50 pollution emergencies and 41 maritime safety emergencies were also dealt with.

Likewise, the Harbour Master's Offices carry out the registration and dispatch of ships, the issuance of professional and recreational titles and certificates and the issuance of all types of reports and authorisations relating to maritime activity. In this regard, it should be noted that files associated with qualifications were managed, including 663 merchant marine qualifications, 2,728 certificates of proficiency and 518 maritime notebooks for crew members. A total of 2,242 shipments of ships and national vessels and 12,465 enrolments and disenrolments of crew members were also processed. The Harbour Master also issued 900 authorizations to facilitate supply to vessels outside the port boundaries (known as Off Per Limit).

With regard to the Ship Registry, 353 registrations of recreational boats and 278 jet skis were issued. The number of ship calls reached 13,777 in the ports of competition of general interest (Puerto de La Luz, Arinaga and Salinetas in Las Palmas, Puerto de Arrecife in Lanzarote and Puerto Rosario in Fuerteventura).

These data are derived from the balance of the year 2023 presented by the Harbour Master of Las Palmas, where work is being done to guarantee the saving of human lives at sea, maritime safety, the prevention and fight against pollution and the control of maritime traffic in its maritime area, among other competencies.

Morocco launches naval manoeuvres 125 kilometres off Fuerteventura.

Rabat's decision could respond to the tension generated by the EU Court of Justice last week in relation to the Sahara

The Royal Moroccan Navy begins next Friday three consecutive months of naval manoeuvres in the south of the country and in the waters of Western Sahara, off the Canary Islands, only 125 kilometres from its coasts, according to the newspaper El Confidencial.

These naval exercises come at a time of growing tension between Morocco and the European Union, after it became known that the Advocate General of the EU has positioned herself in favour of annulling the fisheries agreement between the European Union and Morocco, against the backdrop of the Western Sahara dispute.

According to Brussels, Morocco is a preferred partner, but the fisheries agreement has a stumbling block: it involves the granting of fishing licences in Western Sahara's waters, with the sovereignty of that territory yet to be defined. Thus, in practice, the agreement between Brussels and Rabat means recognising Moroccan control of the coastline of the former Spanish colony, explains Canarias 7 in its digital edition.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, said a week ago that the conclusions of the Advocate General of the European Union are not final and defended the legality of the protocol.
Armas tests the capital's dock for a fast-ferry for passengers and goods to Gran Canaria.
A new line from Puerto del Rosario to Puerto de La Luz on a fast-ferry for passengers and goods

NEWSROOMFUERTEVENTURA

As announced by the Director General of Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands, María Fernández a few weeks ago, the company Armas redirects the transport of goods to Puerto del Rosario after removing operations from the port of Morro Jable during the week.

Yesterday you could see Arma's new ship, a fast Ro Ro type Ferry, for passenger and freight traffic that will make, everything seems to indicate, a daily route between the port of the capital and the Port of La Luz in Gran Canaria.

With the ship's visit, Armas intended to "test the ramp of the capital's dock at full tide, to rule out any operational problem."

This confirms the information given by the executives of Armas in a meeting held in the Cabildo of Fuerteventura between the president of the island, the mayor of Pájara and the Government of the Canary Islands itself to ask for explanations about the loss of operability of the company in Fuerteventura.

At that meeting, the representatives of Armas, the corporate commercial director Óscar Martínez, and the director of institutional relations of the company, Paulino Rivero, gave the pertinent explanations to the public representatives, concerned about the loss of operational capacity of the island.

The Villa de Agaete is a Ro Ro type Fast-Ferry (goods and passengers) of 96 meters in length, 26 meters in width and a draft of 4 meters, with capacity for 868 passengers and 220 vehicles. The sailing speed of the boat is 38 knots.
A sea scare a boat in La Graciosa.

Although there were moments of nervousness, especially among children, the ship docked without problems

A big scare. That was what took a part of the passage that returned from La Graciosa to Órzola, this Sunday, March 10, says Lancelot.

As stated in the video that runs through social networks, taken by one of the passengers of the ship, a wave entered through the stern of the Romero line ship as it entered the cove of the port of Órzola.

There were moments of some nervousness, especially among the children, who cried from fright to see how the sea water entered the passenger deck.

It all ended in a scare, insist the passengers who lived the experience, and who docked minutes later at the Órzola dock.
Despite the fact that the tide was already quite empty, the overflow caused one of the three or four waves in a row that form every five or six minutes in the inlet at the entrance to Puerto de Órzola, to enter through the stern.

The boat was never in any danger, as the skippers of these boats are quite experienced in avoiding this type of phenomenon, although on some occasions it is almost inevitable that some water will enter either due to rough seas or overflow.

The boat that experienced this anecdote was the Líneas Romero boat, which left at 6:00 p.m. from La Graciosa and arrived at 6:30 p.m. in Órzola.

Líneas Romero has over 50 years of experience and has never had a serious accident.
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura asks that the daily connectivity of Armas de Morro Jable to Gran Canaria be recovered.

The president of the Cabildo, Lola García, has asked the Government of the Canary Islands to hold a meeting with the Island Corporation and Naviera Armas to recover maritime connectivity between the port of Morro Jable and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. According to the Island Corporation, Naviera Armas has interrupted the daily connection between both ports and has limited it only to weekends, with the negative consequences that this entails for the commercial and social development of Fuerteventura.

Lola García has recently expressed her concern to the President of the Government of the Canary Islands about the interruption of the line operated by Naviera Armas. "Limiting operations only to weekends is a more serious issue than it seems, not only because it takes away mobility alternatives from the users and residents of Fuerteventura, but also because it means a loss of competitiveness of the island in general and the southern area in particular."

On the other hand, and taking into account that Morro Jable is the gateway of goods to the island, "if we interrupt it, we will be directing the disembarkation of these trucks to the area of Puerto del Rosario, harming the safety of our roads, since the main roads of the island will be congested with the considerable increase in heavy transport from north to south", says the island's president.

In short, "since the first rumours reached us through users, we have requested an urgent meeting with both the Government of the Canary Islands and those responsible for the company, who have agreed to analyse the current situation with the administration". "We know that the Government of the Canary Islands is also concerned about the situation and we hope that negotiations will begin as soon as possible to resolve the situation to maintain the connection with Armas and, if it cannot be with this shipping company, look for alternatives."
Although everything indicates that there is no need to regret personal injuries, an accident occurred this morning in front of the beach of La Concha in Isla de Lobos. The passenger transport ship to the islet, El Majorero suffered an accident and ended up semi-sunk in the area.

Apparently it would have touched with a low in one of the panoramic vision windows in the starboard area that would have opened the waterway.

All tourists and staff would have been evacuated on another boat and in the first instance everything indicates that there is no personal injury to regret.
27 ships will dock in the new cruise season in Puerto del Rosario before the end of this year.

Before the start of the new cruise season, the Councilor for Tourism of the City of Puerto del Rosario, Juan Jiménez, met with Julie Williams, the head of the shipping companies that serve cruise ships arriving in the capital of Majorera.

Throughout the meeting, very important issues for the municipal management of the tourist destination Puerto del Rosario were discussed, such as the possibility of including tourist information in all cruise ships arriving in Puerto del Rosario or the application of tourist information and signage based on augmented reality that is available to cruise passengers and that allows them to obtain all the information of the destination immediately in four languages.

After reviewing the previous season, a review of the schedule of ships that are scheduled to arrive during this 2023/2024 season was made.

Mayor David de Vera stressed that "the arrival of cruise ships is a strategic element to boost the economic development of the capital of Majorera and the rest of the island, being the main entry point for tourists. This factor increases services to make Puerto del Rosario friendlier for neighbors and tourists," said the municipal councilor.

For his part, the Councilor for Tourism, Juan Jiménez, informed the head of the consignee companies of the actions that are scheduled in order to energize the city, among which the continuity of the craft and gastronomy market, performances by folk groups, exhibitions of native sports, guided tours of the city by participants in PFAE courses, as well as the availability of the new Interpretation Center of the Lime Kilns, which can be visited during the stopovers of the cruises.

The forecast of cruise arrivals until December 31 is 27 ships among which vessels such as the Aida Cosma, which is the most modern ship in the Aida Cruises fleet. The season will begin on September 22 with the arrival of the Costa Fortuna of the Costa Cruises shipping company.

Finally, Jiménez took the opportunity to explain the creation of the new Municipal Tourism Council that will be constituted in the near future and that aims to have the participation of representatives of all sectors affected by tourism, inviting Julie Williams to be part of it on behalf of the cruise shipping companies.
