The cell of an international criminal organisation dedicated to the smuggling of migrants along the Atlantic route has been dismantled in Fuerteventura

Agents of the National Police belonging to the Local Brigade of Foreigners and Borders of Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura, in the operational and strategic framework of the fight against irregular immigration and organized crime, have carried out operation "NÁUFRAGO", an investigation that has made it possible to dismantle the operational structure in Spain of an international criminal organization dedicated to the smuggling of migrants from Morocco to the Canary Islands along the Atlantic route.

The Police operation began after the location of two immigrant victims of the network, who agreed to collaborate with justice under the condition of protected witnesses.

Based on his statements, a Moroccan citizen residing in Fuerteventura was identified, directly linked to the leadership of the organisation based in Morocco, specifically in the areas of Tan Tan and El Aaiún.

A violent and hierarchical network with its own means

The investigators accredited the existence of a stable and hierarchical criminal structure, made up of Moroccan citizens with clearly defined functions (recruitment, transport, collection, logistics, piloting and control).

The network had all-terrain vehicles, inflatable boats and weapons, which allowed it to simultaneously carry out different actions in the irregular area.

Migrants were embarked without life jackets or security means, and were subjected to violence, coercion and humiliating treatment, in extreme conditions.

One of the witnesses said that the main perpetrator in Spain threw three migrants into the sea during the crossing, who have since disappeared, and that he physically assaulted the victims.

Another of the witnesses identified the same individual as the pilot of the boat and in charge of collecting payments from the migrants, confirming his central role in the operation.

Connection to another previous investigation in April 2025

Through the analysis of social networks and open sources, investigators determined that this operation is linked to another investigation carried out in April 2025, in which another member of the organization, currently in pre-trial detention, was arrested.

Both individuals maintained a close personal and operational relationship, confirming their membership in the same transnational criminal network.

Arrest and imprisonment

The final phase of the operation took place between October 8 and 9 in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura), culminating in the arrest of the main perpetrator in Spain, a 22-year-old man of Moroccan nationality, for the alleged crimes of:

Membership of a criminal organization
Encouraging illegal immigration
Homicide
Serious threats
Failure to provide assistance
Once the Police proceedings were completed, the arrested man was placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority, who decreed his entry into provisional detention.

The structure dismantled in Spain

With this operation, the National Police has completely dismantled the Spanish cell of a major transnational criminal organisation dedicated to the illegal smuggling of migrants along the Atlantic route to the Canary Islands, reinforcing its commitment to the fight against illegal immigration networks and the protection of victims.

The Civil Guard has arrested two young habitual criminals for two crimes of robbery with violence, one consummated and the other attempted, in the town of Caleta de Fuste.

In a statement, the Benemérita explained that the Events took place in the early hours of September 26 when a group of tourists returning to their hotel complex after leaving a well-known entertainment venue was intercepted by three individuals, one of whom tried to snatch the bag that a young woman was carrying on her shoulder.

However, the victim's resistance initially frustrated the action, although the assailant increased the violence; while when a friend came to her aid, the suspect tripped her and pushed her to the ground, at which time he managed to steal a high-end mobile phone, valued at 770 euros.

As a result of the attack, the young woman suffered a fracture of the radius of one hand; and after consummating the robbery, the aggressor fled accompanied by the other two involved.

For their part, the agents who were on preventive duty in the vicinity and who had seen the suspects moments before, quickly went to the scene to help the victim and collect essential information.

With this initial data, the investigators later managed to fully identify the alleged perpetrator, linked to both the consummated assault and the attempted robbery.

Three days later, at around 1:30 p.m., a new citizen alert led to another Police intervention when a passer-by reported that a young man had tried to steal his skateboard, valued at 820 euros, which was parked in front of a shop on Avenida Alcalde Juan Ramón Soto Morales.
Upon noticing the manoeuvre, the owner confronted the assailant holding the vehicle, at which point the perpetrator brandished a stone in an intimidating manner to force him to let go. When he refused, he attacked him with the object causing minor injuries, and then fled.
In this sense, the quick action of the patrol made it possible to locate him just fifteen minutes later in a nearby field, where he was fully recognized by the victim as responsible for the robbery with violence and injuries. The agents proceeded to arrest him, which also links him to the violent acts committed days earlier in Caleta de Fuste.
The detainees were brought before the courts on 27 and 30 September of this year in the Acting Guard Court of Puerto del Rosario, one of them being ordered by the judicial authority to be imprisoned without bail and notified, and the other author being released pending trial with the obligation to sign in court.

The Fiscal and Border Patrol of the Guardia Civil in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura) have sanctioned two people following an inspection of a recreational boat in Corralejo on 27th September, which was preparing to set sail with six people on board to practise kitesurfing, without the required permits.

According to the Guardia Civil, the inspection formed part of their ongoing checks on tourism-related activities to ensure compliance with both legal and safety regulations. During the inspection, officers found that the vessel lacked all of the necessary documentation to operate legally.

The skipper failed to present any authorisation papers, the mandatory insurance, proof of registration with the Social Institute for Maritime Workers, or a professional qualification allowing them to operate.

These requirements are essential, not only to guarantee the legality of the activity but also to ensure the safety of everyone on board in the event of an emergency.

Following the discovery, additional checks were carried out at the premises of the company allegedly organising the excursion. They found that the boat actually belonged to a different person than the one initially reported.

The owner later admitted that the boat’s documentation was not up to date and confirmed that it had been rented to the supposed skipper for the trip.

The Guardia Civil have said that the case highlights several irregularities which could amount to breaches of Merchant Marine regulations regarding the authorisation and operation of boats.

The way drivers use roundabouts continues to be one of the most common sources of problems on Canarian roads. To improve safety, Spain’s traffic authority (DGT) has issued a reminder of the correct way to approach and navigate them.

According to the DGT, safe driving depends on adjusting speed, selecting the correct lane, and always signalling clearly before changing direction.

Key guidelines from the DGT:

Approach with caution: Reduce speed and give way to vehicles already using the roundabout.
Right-hand lane: For taking the first exit or continuing straight ahead.
Left or central lane (when multiple lanes exist): For taking later exits.
Signal correctly: Use indicators to show your chosen exit, moving to the correct lane before leaving.
Avoid sudden braking or unnecessary lane changes, which increase the risk of accidents.
Fines for roundabout offences:

Crossing from the inner lane directly to the exit: Considered reckless driving, €500 fine and 6 penalty points. Exits should always be taken from the outer lane.
Entering without giving priority: A common serious offence, €200 fine and 4 points (more if reckless).
Changing lanes incorrectly or without signalling: €200 fine (with points if dangerous).
Excessive speed inside a roundabout: Up to €500 fine and 6 points if deemed reckless.
Ignoring pedestrian crossings at exits: €200 fine and up to 4 points.
The DGT stresses that roundabout discipline is essential for reducing accidents and ensuring safer roads for both residents and visitors across the Canary Islands.

The Guard has arrested a 30-year-old man as the alleged perpetrator of a robbery committed on August 30 in a hotel complex in Caleta de Fuste, in the municipality of Antigua, as reported this Saturday by the armed institute.

The robbery took place between 12:15 and 13:15 hours, when the suspect accessed a room on the second floor of the hotel after climbing a perimeter wall and using an air conditioning unit to reach a balcony located about 3.5 meters high. Taking advantage of the fact that the window was open, he entered the room and stole personal belongings valued at approximately 3,500 euros.

Among the stolen items were a high-end titanium watch, two gold rings - one of them encrusted with diamonds valued at 1,500 euros - clothes and electronic devices such as AirPods Pro headphones with an identified serial number.

After the complaint, the Civil Guard carried out an ocular inspection and focused the investigation on tracking the digital trail of the stolen devices. Around 5:00 p.m. on the same day, the agents located part of the stolen material in a home in Puerto del Rosario, which had been acquired by its inhabitants. This action made it possible to identify and locate the alleged perpetrator of the robbery.

The suspect was intercepted at 6:30 p.m. on San Roque Street in Puerto del Rosario, when he was carrying several of the stolen objects, including the titanium watch, gold rings and clothing, which were recognized by the victim.

The Civil Guard located most of the stolen material and recalls that buying objects of dubious origin can constitute a crime of reception

During the operation, other effects were also recovered, such as a backpack and the keys to the victim's home and vehicle, found in a field near the hotel complex. According to the Civil Guard, with these actions it was possible to recover practically all the stolen goods.

The detainee was placed at the disposal of the Guard Court of Puerto del Rosario on September 1.
