Old boat being restored

The president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret López, has announced that the island institution will collaborate economically in the restoration of the Correíllo de La Palma so that it can sail through the Canarian waters again. This was agreed in the telematic meeting held today by the president of Fuerteventura with the Canarian Foundation Correíllo La Palma, which held an ordinary session in which the Foundation's budget for 2022 was also approved.

The proposal proposed by the Foundation for the recovery of this boat contemplates the restoration, rehabilitation and maintenance of the Correíllo La Palma and strengthening its use as a visitable cultural resource. It also plans to hold cultural and training activities, dissemination and research on the maritime cultural heritage of the Canary Islands.

 

In Fuerteventura, in particular, it is intended to carry out in 2022, some of the activities already proposed at the time to the Island Council, among which the loan for its exhibition in the Scientific and Technological Park of one of the original dynamos of the ship, dated in 1912 and already restored.

 

Between 1912 and 1976 the correíllo La Palma regularly united the islands. His arrival in the Canary Islands, along with his twins, the León y Castillo and the Viera y Clavijo, scrapped for decades, marked a milestone because "they put the Canary Islands at the forefront of maritime transport".
