Bus service to be free from 2023!
#1
Noticias:

The buses will be free in the Canary Islands in 2023.

The Government commits to free urban and interurban buses

In the battle for the approval of the General State Budget, the nationalist Canarian Coalition party and the Socialist Party assume an approach that will end up on the part of the nationalists supporting the budget of the Sánchez government for 2023

In this approach a success has been achieved for the Canarian population that uses public transport on the islands since it has been achieved that the buses are free on the islands, after only getting a 50% discount so far.

This first approach had raised differences between the Canarian government and the opposition, when those of the Torres executive affirmed that in no case this difference of 50% to 100% with which the peninsular Cercanías did have would be a comparative grievance, an issue that generated a lot of tension with the nationalists.

The pact of the buses?

"We must glimpse in this movement a rapprochement between the Canarian Coalition and the Socialist Party, since this pact marks a change of course in relations marked by difference," says Cadena SER. "Above all, at the regional level. For Fernando Clavijo, Ángel Víctor Torres has always been 'a puppet' of Madrid, and for the Canarian government, the opposition had always shown its desire to confront each other.

Ángel Víctor Torres has been the first to give his opinion after the news advanced by the SER in the Canary Islands. "I am glad that some political parties have sought consensus and not dispute. I think that is what the Government of Spain has always promoted during these four years: the meeting and the agreement.

We saw it with the first bilateral commission in 12 years, that we were allowed the surplus before the relaxation of the European standard, the road agreement or the transfer of Coasts. We have achieved much more by speaking directly to the government than by fighting." This news, therefore, could mean a different roadmap as far as the electoral period is concerned. And it is that there are only 6 months left for possible changes in the Spanish political landscape. We will have to wait for the political movements of the coming months.

Tamara - I'm pretty sure this is for residents, not tourists. We will have to wait and see if all we need to do is show National ID (TIE for example) or whether we need to register for a Bono card of some sort.

From what I've read, you will need to have a Bono card.  I suppose that further details will be released over the next few weeks.

The Spanish government are still making furlough payments.  I know someone who is still receiving it.  As you say - where does the Money come from.

If it's free for residents they'll hike the fare for tourists.

At some point somebody will file a complaint with the EU claiming it's not fair.  And they'll have a new mess.

aaah, that'll definitely mean that non-residents & tourists will have to pay European city prices, that's where the Money will come from (1+1)
Things didn't get better (in Europe) the last 30 years..

Everybody can buy that card now, if the bus will be free for residents, it seems pretty obvious the card will disappear (somebody, has to pay that free bus). Till now, only logic thoughts, of course.

Buses will be free for frequent travelers.

The Ministry of Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands and those responsible for the area in the councils will specify this week the minimum number of trips.

The Ministry of Transport of the Government of the Canary Islands and those responsible for the area in the councils will specify this week the minimum number of trips to grant the consideration of frequent traveler and thus access free transport in the Canary Islands, which is calculated between 15 and 20 validations.

The figure of the minimum number of trips to reach the consideration of frequent traveler will be specified in a meeting between the Ministry and councils scheduled for this Wednesday, the counselor said in a statement.

The initiative that subsidizes 100% of the price of transport will affect the resident bonus, young person, senior monthly subscription and monthly subscription for people with disabilities and in this way, from January 1, the current holders of any of these titles will automatically access the promotion when renewing their voucher.

On the other hand, those who have not previously had these titles will also be granted free of charge the first month, although they must pay the costs of issuing the personalized card that are 5 euros, since the current holders paid them at the time.

At the end of each month it will be verified that the minimum number of trips stipulated to be considered frequent flyers have been used and, if so, when the time comes to renew the subscription, the gratuity will be applied again.

However, in case of not reaching the stipulated number of validations, when renewing the subscription they must pay their current price that ranges between 15 or 19 euros depending on the title.

...Well, that's certainly one way to do it? Cost us more, or we'll make you pay us...!

Big Grin

You literally couldn't make it up. You'll get people riding the busses to nowhere just to get enough trips on the card. Absolute madness.

Maybe that's the point— to increase the number of passengers/trip to justify the service?
