Decarbonisation in The Canaries
#1
Noticias:

The European Commission selects La Palma and La Graciosa to boost its decarbonisation.

Schallenberg: "With this project, which has the participation and support of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, we will be one step closer to the decarbonisation of the Canary Islands"

The European Commission's "Clean Energy for EU Islands" programme has selected two Canary Islands, La Graciosa and La Palma, to work towards the goal of decarbonisation through the implementation of renewable energy sources and innovative technologies. In total, 30 island territories in the European Union will benefit from this programme.

The project will consist of technical assistance funded by the European Commission for three years, which will accompany both consortia in this process. In the case of La Palma, it will be its Cabildo, together with Sodepal, the La Palma Renovable association and the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands who will assume the work on an island scale.

The La Graciosa project will be led by the association El Sol de la Graciosa, with the support of the NGO ADACIS, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the City Council of Teguise and the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands.

Specifically, the direct support of the Ministry to the initiatives will translate into lines of financing for both projects, an issue that has been decisive in the choice of both candidacies.

The Deputy Minister for Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Energy, Julieta Schallenberg, stressed that "with the joint work of all these public administrations and organisations, the foundations for the future decarbonisation of La Graciosa and La Palma can be laid". He also pointed out that those involved in both projects "have shown their enthusiasm in the face of this great challenge and the willingness to work together to achieve the objectives set".

Finally, he also highlighted the validity of this project for the rest of the islands, since "the experience and knowledge gathered will be exchanged with the rest of the island territories of the European Union, serving as a guide for other islands to achieve their complete decarbonisation as well".

With this programme, the islands of La Palma and La Graciosa will receive advice from the European Commission over the next three years through the aforementioned "Clean Energy for EU Islands" programme, thus promoting their change of model, prioritising the production and consumption of 100% renewable energies.

The support provided by the European initiative will take the form of analysis, evaluation and technical advice for the effective implementation of those actions that are considered most viable to achieve the proposed goals, including not only the generation of energy from renewable sources, but also others linked to mobility. water and raising awareness among the population to promote responsible consumption.

The experience and knowledge gathered will be exchanged with the rest of the island territories of the European Union, serving as a guide for other islands to achieve their complete decarbonisation as well.
