A Dutch anti-COVID denier uses donations to his cause to buy a plot in Fuerteventura.
Virus Truth movement organizer Willem Engel used 50,000 euros in donations to fund land on the island.
Although the judge has ruled in favor of Engel in a trial with ING that urges him to return the accounts, what is demonstrated by the investigation is that the leader of this COVID 19 denial organization used 50,000 euros in donations for his cause in the purchase of a plot in Fuerteventura.
In August last year, ING launched an investigation into Engel's accounts, after media reports about him and his group were published. During the investigation, the bank encountered several irregularities. It turned out that Engel had been using his dance school account for some time to receive donations through Viruswaarheid.
In the investigation, ING stumbled upon an 'irregular transfer' of €50,000 with 'a suspicious description'. Engel, who has been working at ING since 2013, had used the donations, which were actually intended for Virus Truth's activities, in the summer of 2020 to privately fund the purchase of land in Spain, says ING. "Engel could do that without having to answer to anyone."
According to Engel, this is a loan for a project in Fuerteventura. This was urgent, otherwise a fine had to be paid. "A loan agreement has been signed so that everything works in an orderly and transparent way," explains the critic.
However, according to the bank, "nowhere did it appear" that Engel had been transparent with his donors about the use of donations for private purposes or that donors had given their consent. The dance teacher reacts with surprise to this allegation. "We have been completely transparent. By the way, it is not at all up to ING to find out about this, all the documents have been filed with the Chamber of Commerce."
