Giant lizard from GC found in Lajares
#1
Noticias:

A giant lizard from Gran Canaria is discovered on a farm in Lajares.

The Environment and Hunting Area of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, led by Carlos Rodríguez, has been alerted about the presence of a giant Gran Canaria lizard on a private estate in the village of Lajares, located in the municipality of La Oliva. The discovery came when a neighbor was inspecting his family garden due to damage to his plants, he found the reptile trapped in a trap he had set to identify the person responsible for the damage.

The lizard, which measures 44 cm long and weighs 117 grams, is being cared for at the La Oliva Biological Station, in the space managed by RedEXO through the service concession company, GESPLAN. Necessary measures are being taken to ensure their well-being while their situation is assessed and the appropriate course of action for their care and protection is determined.

Once the necessary bureaucratic procedures are managed, this animal will be returned to its natural habitat in Gran Canaria, with RedEXO being in charge of coordinating this important task.

The Minister, Carlos Rodríguez, pointed out that "from the Environment area we continue to work on the preservation of native fauna and flora, collaborating closely with experts and organizations to guarantee the conservation of the species that inhabit our archipelago.

The Gran Canaria giant lizard (Gallotia stehlini) is a species endemic to the island of Gran Canaria. With a primarily vegetarian diet, this reptile plays a crucial role in dispersing the seeds of various plants, making it an essential component of the local ecosystem.

The Canary Islands Early Warning Network for Invasive Alien Species (RedEXOS) aims to locate, identify, control or eradicate new foci or populations of these species in the Canary Islands to prevent their establishment or expansion.

From the Cabildo, a call is made to citizens to immediately inform 112 in case of sighting a species of these characteristics.

Fascinating I wonder how it managed to get from GC to Fuerteventura and then to Lajares. Did it arrive in a vegetation shipment or some such, it hardly swam or carried by a bird.
