Radio Sintonia:

Historic buildings of Fuerteventura: the Hermitage of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The island of Fuerteventura has a wide range of buildings and historical monuments, among them is the Hermitage of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Ox Water). Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Historic-Artistic Monument of interest to the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands, by Decree 602/1985, of December 20, published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands nº 13, of January 31, 1986.

A building with almost 400 years of history
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is located in Agua de Bueyes, municipality of Antigua, on a small elevation belonging to the extension of the southeast slope of Lomo la Virgen. It was founded on January 28, 1642 by Mrs. María Gutiérrez and endowed on September 18, 1644 in union with her brother Diego Cabrera León.

The first references of its construction are recorded for 1644, being its structure quite simple made with masonry walls and cake cover and with poor quality woods. In 1718 expansion works were undertaken, raising it from the foundations, with a wooden roof and tiles and brick floor, leaving the stonework reserved for the openings. In 1731 D. Esteban González de Socueva blesses the new hermitage, being still to make the sacristy, which is made in 1757, and the bell tower that is executed in the form of a simple belfry between 1770-73. Around the same time, the barbican or crenellated wall that surrounds the complex was built, to which in 1792 some doors were placed to prevent the entry of cattle.

Structure
The current building does not present many variations since then, being of a single nave, roof to three waters and tile seen. The sacristy is attached to the north wall or the Gospel. The hermitage has two doors facing west and south, both with jambs and voussoirs that form semicircular arches, made of white stonework. The main façade, located to the west, has in its upper part a carved cross and an oculus, both carved in white stonework. The belfry executed in stonework in the form of a semicircular arch, is placed in the upper right part of the façade. The whole complex is surrounded by a crenellated wall or barbican that consists of two openings with orientation equal to that of the doors of the hermitage. The main span of the barbican, located to the west, has jambs and voussoirs that form a semicircular arch made of white stonework. Around it there are three decorative motifs also carved in clear stonework.

Inside, the roof is made of three-sided wood, decorated with simple geometric motifs.
