Franciscans of Chile remember this Saturday Fray Andresito 170 years after his death.
In an article published in aciprensa by the Argentine journalist Julieta Villar, the figure of the majorero friar is remembered.
According to the article by Julieta Villar for aciprensa, the Franciscan brothers of Chile called to participate in the celebrations on the 170th anniversary of the death of Venerable Fray Andresito this Saturday, January 14, in the Temple of the Franciscan Recoleta.
"The day will be a thanksgiving for the life and testimony of simplicity and service of Fray Andresito," he says, for this, two Masses will be celebrated in the temple located on Avenida Recoleta 220 (Metro Patronato) in the city of Santiago.
The first will be at 12:00 noon, presided over by the Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago, Msgr. Álvaro Chordi Miranda; and the second, at 7:30 p.m., presided over by Msgr. Cristián Castro, also Auxiliary Bishop.
"Pope Francis, through the Apostolic Penitentiary of the Holy See, granted the plenary indulgence to those who visit the temple of the Franciscan Recollect on January 14, the anniversary of the Easter of Fray Andresito," explains Julieta Villar, a journalist who is part of the ACI Prensa team as a correspondent for Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay
Venerable Fray Andresito
Born in Fuerteventura (Spain) on January 10, 1800, Andrés Filomeno García Acosta, known as Fray Andresito, emigrated to Montevideo (Uruguay) after the death of his mother, in 1832.
He entered the Franciscan Order in 1834, and after the expulsion of the Franciscans from Uruguay, in 1839 he moved to the Convent of the Franciscan Recoleta in Santiago de Chile.
He was known as the "humble Franciscan beggar" who cared for the physical and spiritual health of poor and rich.
He visited prisoners and the sick, giving accompaniment and healing through the laying on of hands and with medicinal herbal remedies that he himself prepared.
On Sundays he went to the cemetery and invited those who wanted to accompany him to pray for the souls in purgatory.
In the evenings, he met with workers, with whom he prayed and reflected. The movement grew and became the "Brotherhood of the Heart of Jesus", which had chapels, schools and workshops, thus becoming Andresito a promoter of the organization of workers in Chile.
He presented himself as "doctor by the grace of Christ, the Virgin and Saint Philomena", and many testimonies credit healings. He died on January 14, 1853 with a reputation for sanctity.
The Franciscan Order continues its legacy with a soup kitchen adjacent to the Recoleta temple, which bears its name. In the museum documents and memorabilia of the friar are preserved.
His heroic virtues were recognized by Pope Francis, who on July 8, 2016 declared him Venerable. If a miracle attributed to his intercession proves, the Holy Father could proclaim him Blessed.
