Extremadura (24%), the Canary Islands (22.6%), Galicia (22.5%) and Andalusia (21.7%) are the autonomous communities with the highest number of people with obesity, while Madrid (14.6%), Castilla y León (15.7%) and Navarre (15.8%) have the lowest rate.
According to the analysis carried out by the National Epidemiology Centre (Carlos III Health Institute) and the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition, the provinces with the highest number of people with obesity are Lugo (27.3%), Badajoz (27%) and Cuenca (24.4%) and there are fewer in Girona (13.9%) and Madrid (14.6%).
According to this study, the provinces with the highest percentage of the population with obesity are located mostly in the southern half of the country.
By gender, the prevalence of obesity by region ranges from 24.9% in Extremadura to 15.4% in Ceuta in men, while in women it is between 23.2% in Extremadura and 13.1% in Madrid.
In the case of the Canary Islands, it corresponds to 22.5% in men and 22.6% in women.
As with children, excess weight and obesity in adults are more common in people and population groups with lower levels of education, or who live in smaller municipalities and census tracts with lower income levels.
Highest prevalence of obesity in the Canary Islands
According to the study, the autonomous communities with the highest prevalence of obesity are located in the south and southeast of the country and the Canary Islands.
Thus, the regions with the highest number of obese children are Melilla (19.3%), Ceuta (18.4%), Andalusia (14.1%), the Valencian Community (14.1%), the Canary Islands (13.8%) and Castilla-La Mancha (11.7%).
In addition, in most regions there are almost twice as many boys with obesity as girls. In particular, among children who are obese in the Canary Islands, 17.9% are boys and 9.9% are girls.
